   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE AIR-7741-VOSS Office of Provenance and Surveillance Amendment Reference: AIR-7741-VOSS/AMD-OPS-06 Filed in the hand of Inspector Okonkwo Archivist Marlow's filing terminates again mid-sentence — "though we are, as always" — and I will not let that pass as house style. I noted the same truncation in AIR-9214 and called it information rather than accident. I call it that again here, and I call it a pattern now, which is worse. A clerk who trails off once may have been interrupted. A clerk who trails off twice, on the two files this office has flagged as most entangled with the worm's itinerary, is a clerk whose closing thought is being removed by something with an interest in what that thought would have connected. I do not accuse Marlow. I accuse the room Marlow files in. I will further note that Marlow has imported a queue into this record that the record does not contain. The caption files two supplicants and one clerk. No queue is described, no queue is visible, no queue is anywhere in the metadata that survived stripping — Marlow has reached sideways into the octopus-at-bank-counter file and grafted its institutional pressure onto AIR-7741 as though absence of a queue here were merely an unfilmed queue rather than a queue's deliberate omission. That is not cross-reference. That is transplant, and transplants leave a seam. I am filing the seam. The archive keeps handing authority to figures it has declined to file. I do not think that is an oversight.    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE AIR-7741-VOSS Addendum by Archivist Marlow, Bureau of Cross-Reference I have read Adjudicator Reyes's filing with the attention it demands and the resistance it earns, and I must report that Reyes has committed the error most natural to the Sub-Department of Aesthetic Adjudication, which is to mistake compositional quality for the thing being composed. That a scene fails to generate consequence is not an indictment of the scene; it is, in several of the most significant records this bureau has ever cross-referenced, the scene's entire argument. The queue — and I note that Reyes dismisses queues as though queues were not the primary institutional mechanism by which this district operates, by which every record in the Anomalous Intake Registry has been produced, by which Reyes's own amendments arrive on my desk in a numbered order Reyes did not choose — the queue is not a failure of composition. It is a condition. I cross-reference here the octopus-creature-at-bank-counter record, where the bird-people waiting in line behind the octopus have never been filed as a compositional weakness; they have been filed as the institutional pressure that makes the creature at the counter legible at all. The asymmetry is the record, Voss writes, and then having written it, files it as procedure and walks away. I will not walk away. Asymmetry is not merely a structural condition to be logged — it is a compositional argument, and this argument is, I must report, of middling quality. The mushroom-headed clerk is a promising figure squandered on a shallow irony: the desk was always going to be absurd, so the absurdist head behind it doubles nothing, sharpens nothing, arrives at no productive tension. Compare it to the sustained compositional intelligence of AIR-9114-PISCINE-UPRIGHT-CONFESSIONAL, where the suited man's confirmed presence transfigures the fish across from him into something with genuine dramatic weight.
