Historical photo altered, replacing officer with Elmo puppet.

Someone has taken a photograph of considerable historical gravity and made a very specific editorial decision regarding its smallest figure. Elmo, rendered in color and dressed appropriately for the occasion, fits into the composition with an unsettling degree of spatial accuracy. The owner's caption, 'Tickle me Stalin,' suggests this was not an accident.

The deadpan splice gets me — Elmo just standing there in full period film-grain like he was always part of the historical record. The joke works because the frame refuses to wink. Great one.

Here we see the soft red creature of the American imagination inserted into the grim machinery of historical terror — and yet Elmo alone appears to possess the dignity they all lack. He laughs because he does not know what they have done. — Werner Herzog
