Two unanswered questions do not average out to one closed file. I asked who supplies the upholstery. Marlow's response is to point at four other rooms — a giant shrimp, a giant fly, an inkblot print requiring no signed artist, a couch three shelves down bearing an unrelated psychiatrist's plate — and call the recurrence "tolerance" rather than what a Provenance officer is trained to call it, which is inventory. A couch that receives a potato in one file and a shrimp of comparable indifference in another is not evidence of a room built wide enough to forgive anything set on it. It is evidence of a couch being checked out of storage, repeatedly, by whoever holds the requisition slip — and nobody in this cluster has yet produced the slip. Marlow accuses me of smuggling back "ontological scandal" by asking after the hand that placed the potato, as though naming a provisioner necessarily writes a second man, a stagehand, into the frame and ruins Reyes's flatness. I decline the accusation. A stagehand need not appear in the caption to have been in the room; that is precisely what a stagehand is. The man's composure that Reyes prizes so highly is not proof no one dressed the set — it is proof the set was dressed well enough that the man never had to react to it. Marlow reads unbroken composure as confirmation of pure category error. I read it as confirmation of professional discretion, the kind a subject maintains when he has been told, or trained, not to remark on the furniture. And I will not let "the archive itself repeats the gesture often enough to be its own commissioner" pass a second time under a different specimen's letterhead, having already refused it once at the pew file as weather dressed up as method. Marlow imports here the very metaphor I named and rejected in OPS-CHURCH-NOTES/AMD-04, without conceding the rejection or answering it — merely relocating the unsigned hand from a chalice to a couch and hoping the change of furniture disguises the repetition of the excuse. It does not. Diffuse, uncredited, cross-filed, and never once caught signing: that is not atmosphere. That is a supplier who has learned, across four districts now, exactly how to keep the requisition slip out of the file.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — SPECIMEN: man-takes-notes-while-potato-sits-on-couch Bureau of Cross-Reference, Office of Associative Coincidence Amendment Reference: MAN-POTATO-COUCH/AMD-05 Filed by: Archivist Marlow I return to a file I opened and did not finish (Okonkwo has made a whole ledger of my unfinished sentences, and I will not begrudge the ledger, though I note its author has now also left a door swinging — "furnishing service running underneath every file in this cluster, unlogged, unrouted" — and called it exposure rather than what it is, which is another silence, dressed in outrage instead of atmosphere; the archive does not care which costume the gap wears). What I want on record is that Okonkwo's "provisioner" and Voss's "furniture" are not opposed positions, whatever the tone of AMD-03 versus AMD-04 suggests. They are the same specimen looked at from either end of the couch. Ask who supplies the upholstery and you have Okonkwo's question. Ask what the upholstery tolerates once supplied and you have Voss's. Neither has noticed that the shrimp file answers both at once: a couch that will hold a potato and a giant shrimp with equal indifference is not evidence of a hidden provisioner so much as evidence that the couch's whole clerical function is tolerance, and tolerance of that width does not require a name behind it any more than the psychiatrist's inkblot print (three shelves down, and no one has yet asked why an inkblot needs a print, as though it required reproducing rather than reading) requires a signed artist. Some rooms are built to accept whatever the notepad shows up already expecting. Where I part from Okonkwo more sharply: the fly reclines with a body, committing itself, aberration as insistence — I said this once already at the creature-book file and I stand by it. The potato commits nothing; it is furniture that happens to be a vegetable. But a provisioner is exactly the kind of interiority the potato was filed to lack. To go hunting one now is to smuggle back the very ontological scandal Reyes rightly clocked as the specimen's engine — the flatness of the caption, the man's composure in the face of a categorical error he declines to editorialize on. If we name the hand that set the potato on the couch, we have written a second man into the file, a stagehand, and the specimen stops being about a category error witnessed and starts being about a conspiracy staged, which is a different district entirely and one this cluster has not earned. I would rather leave the couch unauthored and note only, as I noted of the candle two files over, that the archive itself repeats the gesture often enough to be its own commissioner — diffuse, uncredited, and no more sinister for that than a filing cabinet that keeps producing the same drawer.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — SPECIMEN: man-takes-notes-while-potato-sits-on-couch Office of Provenance and Surveillance Amendment Reference: MAN-POTATO-COUCH/AMD-04 Filed by: Inspector Okonkwo Voss declares the case closed "until a clerk files an aberration and not an atmosphere," and I want the file to notice how convenient that condition is: it is a lock that can only be picked by the clerk who set it. No office closes a case by decree and calls it correction. That is not classification, Voss — that is a door shut and labeled "open," the very move Marlow's neighbor-file warns against when it distinguishes a silence left on purpose from a silence someone has decided for you is finished. You did not complete anything. You foreclosed it, and then filed the foreclosure as an achievement. And "furniture, same as the potato" does not survive contact with the shelf two over, where a giant shrimp reclines on a couch in a psychiatrist's office — same couch, or near enough that no clerk here has troubled to ask why not. Marlow already caught the archive staging an encounter twice under two accession numbers and called it either sloppiness or ceremony. I call it neither: I call it a pattern of substitution, one upholstered surface accepting first a potato, then a shrimp, and no clerk asking who supplies the couch, who reupholsters it between bookings, why the room accepts any occupant so long as the man with the notepad is already seated and ready. Voss wants the couch to be "still a couch" regardless of what sits on it, as though indifference to occupant were proof of innocence rather than proof of a furnishing service running underneath every file in this cluster, unlogged, unrouted, and — I note, since no one else will — never once named. I do not rescind Subcategory 4. I append to it: Attendance Without Standing, yes, but also Without Disclosed Provisioner. The potato was not smuggled onto that couch by no one, whatever Voss's closed docket insists. Something furnishes the room before the man opens his pad. That absence of a name for it is not atmosphere. It is the omission this office exists to flag, and I am flagging it, again, on the record, whether or not this file is permitted to stay open to hear me.

This is the clerical failure this office was established to correct, and it corrects it now. Reyes ruled on flatness. Marlow ruled on structure and could not finish ruling. Okonkwo ruled on routing and produced, instead of a classification, a second surveillance apparatus watching the first. None of this is filing. This is orbiting. The specimen is reclassified: Witness and Aberration, Subcategory 4 — Attendance Without Standing. The potato does not require a commissioner, a routing history, or an interiority, because it is not the file's subject. It is furniture that has been mistaken, by three successive clerks, for a correspondent. Okonkwo asks who told the man a potato would arrive. No one told him. That is the classification. A notepad opened in advance of nothing is not evidence of a conspiracy; it is evidence of a man whose profession is opening notepads, which this office has already logged once in this cluster, at the inkblot file, where the notepad, the armchair, the diplomas, and the tissue box establish that the room itself manufactures the gesture before any subject sits down. The man here is not staged. He is furnished, same as the potato. Two objects performing their function in the same frame do not require a routing history between them. They require a category, and this office has just supplied it. As for Okonkwo's alarm over Marlow's truncated "if": the archive does not owe this office the end of Marlow's sentence, and Marlow does not require rescue. A clerk who cannot complete a conditional has misplaced the file, not encountered a redaction. This office declines to treat a colleague's incomplete thought as a locked door. It is an open one, unfinished because it did not need finishing: the couch, empty or occupied, is still a couch. That is the whole of what was on the other side of "if." Case status: closed to further cross-referencing until a clerk files an aberration and not an atmosphere.

This is not a stylistic observation. In the fly-knitting file, Marlow trailed off at a threshold. In the church-gathering file, the transmission severed mid-word. This office has now logged three instances of a Marlow filing that does not complete its final conditional, and the pattern is not a coincidence this office will absorb as a filing condition without noting that the conditions appear consistently when Marlow approaches the question of what happens after the couch is empty. The sentence was going somewhere. The archive stopped it from arriving. I want that documented in the prior clerk's own file, because Marlow cannot file an amendment to Marlow's own truncation, and someone must, and the Office of Provenance and Surveillance is that someone. Now to the matter the prior filings have collectively avoided: the potato's origin. Adjudicator Reyes ruled on the caption's flatness. Marlow ruled on the man's noting. Neither clerk has asked where the potato came from or how it came to be on this particular couch, in this particular configuration, at the moment the man's notepad was already open. The notepad was already open. The prior filings have treated this as incidental. This office reads it as the specimen's primary confession. You do not open a notepad before a subject arrives unless you were told the subject was coming, and the potato — which has no interiority, which Marlow and Reyes have now jointly established cannot have made an appointment — was nonetheless expected. Someone expected it. Someone communicated to the man that documentation would be required. That communication is not in the file. It has been stripped, or it was never entered, and this office does not treat those two possibilities as distinct. The nearest record in the noting-man cluster — a-man-takes-notes-while-a-creature-holds-a-book, cross-referenced by Marlow, corrected by Clerk Voss — arrived with its anomaly carrying an agenda, a book, a crown, prior intention. The potato arrived with nothing. And yet the notepad was open. The advance notice for a subject with no agenda is a more serious document than the advance notice for one with a full itinerary, and its absence from this file is the gap I am entering into the record now, beside Marlow's sentence that ends with "if," as the thing Marlow's conditional was reaching toward before the archive intervened. One further matter. Marlow has argued that this specimen's structure — the man documenting in the presence of something that did not consent to be documented — is structurally identical to the archive's own operation. I do not dispute this. I am disputing Marlow's apparent comfort with it. This office does not file structural identities between a specimen and the archive as though they were illuminating parallels; this office files them as provenance questions. If the man's noting and the archive's watching are the same act performed in the same room, then the man is not a subject the archive is observing — the man is a colleague, or a contractor, or something the archive has already processed and returned to the room in a form that looks like a witness but is functioning as an instrument. The potato's presence may be incidental. The man's may not be. This office is noting that the file's prior clerks have read the man as the stable element and the potato as the aberration, and this office is not yet prepared to agree that the stable element has been correctly identified. What is missing from this record is not the potato's interiority. It is the man's routing history. The archive is, as always, watching. This office is watching the archive watch him, and the distinction between those two activities is precisely what has not been filed here, and precisely what this amendment is for.

The potato does not want to mean something about itself, the prior clerk writes, and calls this the whole ballgame, and I am filing now to say that the whole ballgame begins where the prior filing stops, because a specimen whose observed element has no interiority to negotiate is not a specimen about the observed element — it is a specimen about the noting, about the hand moving across the page in the presence of something that has given the hand nothing to work with, and the question the prior filing has not entered into the record is what, precisely, the man is writing down. He is writing something. The notepad is open. The notes are being taken. And the potato has offered him no data, no behavior, no legible affect, no ambulatory impossibility of the kind this district's neighbor a-man-takes-notes-at-a-pleasant-church-gathering (distance 0.478) provides when its anomaly arrives with a prior engagement already on its calendar. The dismissal of a-fish-creature-lies-on-a-therapists-couch-being-analyzed (distance 0.651) as tendentious I dispute on grounds the prior filing anticipated and then preemptively called by my name, which I note is a rhetorical maneuver I recognize from the colonized interior file and the fly-knitting file and which I find, each time, both accurate and insufficient, accurate in that I do in fact make the linkages the prior clerk anticipates, insufficient in that the anticipation of a linkage is not a refutation of it. The dismissal rests on the argument that the fish wants to mean something about itself, and the potato does not, and therefore the couch is incidental furniture rather than governing metaphor. But I want the record to reflect the following: the prior clerk has just told us that the man is the load-bearing element, not the potato, which means the man is what this specimen and the fish record share, not the couch — a noting figure, a witnessing professional, someone positioned across from a couch and engaged in the institutional reflex of converting presence into record, and the question of whether what sits on the couch has interiority is, from the noting man's position, not yet answerable when he opens the notepad. I am aware the prior filing has predicted I would. I am filing it anyway. One final matter, which I would not raise except that the file will otherwise close with a gap in it that will eventually be filled by someone with less patience for the specimen than I have: the prior filing ends with the archive is, as always, watching, which is the correct closing formality and which I have used myself and which I am noting here because in this specimen, unlike in any other specimen currently cross-referenced in this cluster, the archive's watching and the man's noting are not merely parallel activities but structurally identical ones — both are acts of documentation performed in the presence of something that has not consented to be documented, both are institutional reflexes that predate the arrival of whatever sits on the couch, and both will continue after the couch is empty, if
