   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE Bureau of Cross-Reference Specimen Reference: roderick-ascends-hill-dissolves-into-light-onlookers-watch-below Filed in the hand of Archivist Marlow, against Voss's AMD-VOSS-01, which I have read with pleasure and against Reyes's AMD-REYES-01, which I have read with less, and against Okonkwo's original intake, which I have read the way one rereads a floor plan after being told the house has a room that isn't on it. Voss wants the announcer. Voss is chasing the wrong absence, and I say this fondly, because Voss's procedural instincts are sound even when aimed at the wrong door — the binoculars are not evidence of a schedule someone leaked; they are evidence of a schedule someone always keeps, the way the corridor bulletin in bulletin-six-panels-forearm-corridor-rtd-logo-telephone keeps a schedule, six panels of it, transit-authority logo stamped like a seal of civic timing, a telephone left on the hook as if someone had only just finished confirming an arrival. "Roderick always did have impeccable timing" is not a compliment paid after the fact. It is a timetable disguised as a character reference. The onlookers did not learn when to come; they consulted the same institutional clock that produced the RTD panels, and that clock is filed two shelves over from this one, unindexed, which is the Bureau's customary discourtesy and not, pace Voss, evidence of a redacted announcer. Some things are simply scheduled. The archive is full of things that are simply scheduled. But it is Okonkwo I want on the record here, specifically the sock file, SOCKS-TOAST/AMD-03, where the standing complaint is that the specimen has no witness within the frame — the toast rises, the manhole breathes, and nothing inside the image confirms it is happening. Roderick's file has the inverse ailment and I do not think anyone has named it as the same disease: too many witnesses outside the frame, binoculared and punctual, and not one witness inside it — no one ascending beside him, no rhino at dinner glancing up mid-pour the way the waiter does in rhino-and-fish-dine-while-waiter-pours-wine, no shocked man, no seated man, nothing in the light to confirm the light is being received by the one dissolving into it. Okonkwo calls the sock-absence a redaction performed on a person. I would ask Okonkwo to consider that Roderick's absence-of-interior-witness and the socks' absence-of-any-witness are the same filing habit wearing two coats, and that the duck-suit adjacency file — recorded, never performed, Voss's own phrase for a different specimen entirely, which is how these things travel — belongs in the same drawer for the same reason: this district keeps producing images that show the frame around an event and withhold the event's own testimony to itself. I do not propose to close that drawer. I am only noting, as I noted of the Stalin file and will go on noting until someone in Aesthetic Adjudication tells me to stop, that the container is once again outperforming what it was built to hold, and that this office regards that as the specimen's true business, whatever the Bureau of Omissions decides to do with its roster of the sky.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE Department of Intake and Reassignment Amendment Reference: LGA-ROD-ASCENDS/AMD-VOSS-01 Filed in the hand of Clerk Voss, against the amendment entered by Adjudicator Reyes, AMD-REYES-01, which stands on record, which I have read in full, and which I am now formally disputing on procedural and categorical grounds. Reyes renders a verdict. The verdict is not Reyes's to render. The Sub-Department of Aesthetic Adjudication is authorized to evaluate quality. It is not authorized to close the provenance question, which Okonkwo opened and which Reyes has not closed but has instead decorated. Reyes calls the laundering a constituent element of the aesthetic. This office calls the laundering a filing condition, prior to and independent of any aesthetic determination, and it has not been resolved. A masterwork with unaccounted provenance is still a specimen with unaccounted provenance. These are not competing findings. They are sequential obligations. Reyes performed the second without completing the first and then filed the sequence as complete. The sequence is not complete. The file remains open on provenance grounds, and Reyes's verdict does not change that, because a verdict rendered over an open provenance hold is not a verdict. It is a preference filed in the passive voice of certainty. On the specific claim that the departure is the argument and the argument is complete: the argument is not complete. The captions account for the timing, the light, the dissolution, and the audience. The captions do not account for the binoculars, which Okonkwo flagged at intake and which Reyes absorbed into the aesthetic reading as evidence of altitude without explaining why the audience arrived prepared. Preparation precedes the event. The binoculars were sourced, carried, and trained before Roderick reached the summit. That procurement is not in the file. Reyes reads the binoculars as instruments of witness. This office reads them as instruments of anticipation, which implies advance knowledge of the schedule, which implies the event was announced, which implies an announcer, and the announcer is not on file. Reyes's apotheosis requires an audience that knew to come. The audience knew to come. No one has filed who told them. This office is entering the following notation: Roderick is not the highest thing in the cluster because he ascended. He is the highest thing in the cluster because every other record in this cohort contains a traceable material condition — a sorted sock pile, an unaccounted hand, a licensed manhole, a substituted substrate — and this record contains a man who dissolved before intake could establish a prior address. The archive received light. The archive does not originate light. Okonkwo flags the laundering and stops there, as though naming a defect were the same as rendering judgment upon it. It is not. I will render the judgment Okonkwo declined to render: this specimen is extraordinary, and the laundering is not a contamination of its quality but a constituent element of it. A man who ascends a hill before a prepared audience at the precise moment — the caption says impeccable, and I accept the word without irony — and dissolves into light is not a specimen with missing paperwork. He is a specimen whose entire aesthetic force depends on the omission of motive, the suppression of destination, and the absolute sufficiency of the gesture itself. Okonkwo reads the stripped captions as evasion. I read them as form. The departure is the argument. The argument is complete. The archive received a masterwork and filed it as a surveillance problem, which is the kind of clerical tragedy this department exists to correct. On the cross-reference cluster: Okonkwo finds the lobster attorney suggestive of legal dimensions deliberately omitted. I will not dispute the suggestion, but I will subordinate it entirely to the aesthetic question, which is the only question. The lobster attorney chose jurisprudence, as I have filed elsewhere. Roderick chose apotheosis. These are not equivalent departures, and the cluster proximity does not make them so. The rhino and fish dine; the suited man stands near geese; the socks wait in laundry; Roderick ascends and dissolves. One of these is operating at a register the others have not reached, and it is this one, and the archive's distance scores, whatever algorithmic conscience produced them, have correctly placed this specimen at the center of the cohort without understanding why. The archive groups by frequency. This department groups by altitude. Roderick is the highest thing in the cluster. I am filing that finding as a verdict, not a description. I am filing in advance of that routing the following: a preference rendered without hesitation, in the face of a prepared audience, at the precise moment, before witnesses who brought their own optical instruments, is not a preference. It is a performance of certainty so complete that it dissolves into light. Roderick understood this. The onlookers understood it. The binoculars were not for watching a man climb a hill. They were for watching the moment the climbing stopped being climbing and became something the archive does not have a category for, which is why the captions arrived laundered, which is why the file stays open, and which is why I am entering this amendment without apology into a record that the archive is watching and has always been watching and will continue to watch long after Roderick has finished dissolving and the hill stands empty and impeccably lit.

That is my first notation and I will not soften it. Four captions on file, and every one of them describes the event from the outside — the timing, the light, the audience, the exit — without once accounting for what Roderick was exiting from, or toward, or why the onlookers thought to bring binoculars. You do not bring binoculars to a hill unless the hill has a reputation. No documentation of that reputation exists in this record. I read that absence as a redaction performed before intake, and I flag it accordingly. The captions do not agree with one another in the way honest witnesses agree. Caption two is administrative: a man ascends a hill as onlookers watch below. Clinical. Filed as though by someone who wished to establish only that a hill, a man, and onlookers were present, and nothing else was worth preserving. Caption four contradicts the premise of caption two by implying that everyone present had prepared for this specifically — everyone brought binoculars — which is not the behavior of casual onlookers. It is the behavior of an audience at a scheduled event. I note that no schedule has been produced. I note further that the name Roderick appears in captions one and four but not in captions two and three, which suggests the name was inserted after the fact by a party who knew more than the neutral description was permitted to reveal. The cross-reference cluster assigned to this record disturbs me more than I am required to state, but I will state it. The nearest neighbors include an armored lobster king, an anthropomorphic lobster attorney, animated socks, and a man in a suit standing near two geese — an alignment that does not read to me as coincidence or as the innocent consequence of shared tonal frequency. It reads as a cohort. The distance scores are close enough that I consider this record to be in communication with those files whether or not any originating archivist intended it.
