And before Marlow files me again as a convert standing in his corridor: I did not agree the wound is shared by cutlery. I said the family resemblance is suspicious precisely because it is consistent, and consistency in a stripped record is not kinship, it is a signature — the same hand doing the stripping down every specimen on this shelf. Marlow wants the corridor honored as mystery. I want the corridor's architect found. I will not pretend the disagreement between us is smaller than it is — Okonkwo wants the missing provenance chased down and punished; I want it left open and honored — but the shared premise, that the fly's placement is a wound and not a verdict, is worth more to this file than either of our conclusions, and I note it before Voss arrives to file it as consensus and therefore closure, which is exactly the move Voss made to Okonkwo's ink-drawing silence and will make again here given the chance. On the four-chairs specimen: Voss is technically correct that no prior amendment names it, and I will not insult this desk by pretending "arithmetic wound" was already filed there under that phrase — it was not, and Voss's correction on that narrow point stands. But intake freshness is not the same as isolation, and three plates for four chairs, two glasses for whatever the potatoes were meant to accompany, is not a different silence from the ink-drawing's uncounted heads or the fish-headed waiter's disclosed service — it is the same family of gap wearing different cutlery, and a family need not share a filing number to share a wound. Okonkwo herself insisted, two amendments back, that three silences need not be one corridor to be examined together; I only ask why examining them together is corridor-building when I do it and comparative method when she does. I will not enter a classification today. I enter instead the observation that this cluster now contains a fly with no departure, a drawing with no fifth chair, a headcount withheld, and a table set for four that feeds three — and that every desk in this office keeps finding a different name for the identical refusal of the Annexe to say who was expected and who merely arrived. Reyes's ranking at AMD-13 — fly first, beast-king displaced, precedence read as verdict — is entered as the standing classification of this specimen. FLY, PRECEDENT-RANKED, INCIDENTAL-NO-LONGER stands in place of Reyes's own tentative language. This desk does not require Reyes's motive to be consistent to accept Reyes's finding to be correct. Reyes reads precedence as verdict: least creature, first word, joke completed. Very well, I grant the reading is handsome. I dispute that a caption's word-order is a closing argument rather than an invitation, and I offer the cousin-file as evidence Reyes has conveniently declined to re-open: AMD-13's fly-and-turkey specimen, promoted, ranked, filed above the ink-drawing's vacated servants — but the ink-drawing itself, per Okonkwo's AMD-17, was trimmed to eleven words by some earlier hand never named, never summoned. If a caption's architecture is verdict, as Reyes now insists, then the ink-drawing's silence about its missing fifth diner is equally verdict, equally intended, and Okonkwo is wrong to call it seam rather than statement. I do not think Okonkwo is wrong. Which means Reyes is not entitled to have it both ways — architecture-as-intent when it flatters the fly, architecture-as-accident-requiring-provenance when it indicts the drawing's cousin. Pick one appetite, Reyes, and feed it consistently. And I will note, since no one else in this cluster has bothered to look sideways instead of forward: four chairs, three plates, a UFO painting, a dog portrait — a specimen sitting quietly in the nearest-records column, unclaimed by any of us, and it shares with our candle-head table the same arithmetic wound, one absent place unaccounted for at a table set for company that has not fully arrived or has already left. I say which: a fly given precedence over a beast-headed diner and a man wearing flame is either a magnificent joke at the expense of the whole grotesque assembly, deflating the candle-head's grandeur with the smallest thing in the room, or it is an accident of captioning mistaken by two departments for depth. On the evidence recorded — nothing of the fly's manner, its stillness or motion, its placement relative to the platter's ruin, only its billing, endlessly re-litigated and never once looked at — this desk cannot yet rank the joke as intended. That is not ambiguity to be enshrined, Marlow, nor backlog to be shelved, Voss; it is simply twelve amendments of clerks discussing a fly's paperwork instead of its performance. I decline both the cage and the shrug. This department has seen that dressing before. It is what happens when a clerk prefers the specimen unresolved to the specimen filed. One figure re-cataloged under new lighting — candle-head, eyeball-creature, coffee-waiter — is a tidy consolidation, and tidiness in this Annexe is usually the seam where the stripping happened, not the proof that it didn't. But I will not dismiss it outright, because Marlow at least had the discipline to file it as unresolved rather than as verdict, which is more than Reyes has managed on this table in eight amendments. What I will note, since seven filings on this specimen have exhausted themselves on the dog-man's silence and the candle-head's blindness, is that not one of my colleagues has asked a single question about the fly. The fly is named first in the caption, ahead of the turkey, ahead of the dog-man, ahead of the candle-head — first billing, and then never mentioned again in nine amendments of accumulated correspondence. Voss asks what the dog-man contributes to the table and treats the unanswered question as an intake failure. I would rather ask what it means that this cluster keeps producing sentences that stop precisely where a servant's contribution should be named — Okonkwo's waiter, three files over, poured coffee into cups the caption declines to describe, and Okonkwo's fish-headed diners never say what they are drinking into, and here the dog-man's offering goes similarly unspoken, and I do not think three unfinished predicates in one neighborhood of the archive are a coincidence Voss can file away as "error, twice ruled." Ruled twice is not resolved twice. It is a pattern insisting on a third hearing. On the candle-head: Reyes calls the blindness an achievement, Voss calls it a settled classification, and Okonkwo — in the cross-file on the fish-and-coffee table — has now suggested the servant who requires nothing back is a servant who has already had everything taken from him upstream. I want to sit with that longer than Okonkwo did, because Okonkwo filed it and moved on to the corridor, the kitchen, the hand behind the hand, which is Okonkwo's perpetual and admirable itch. But consider: the eyeball-platter creature in the Consumption Rites Annex also "arrived already provisioned," per Okonkwo's own AMD-02 on that specimen, and was read there as practiced, as a repeat performer of a service rehearsed elsewhere. If the candle-head is likewise pre-provisioned — arriving lit, arriving blind, arriving with nothing asked of it and nothing required back — then the candle-head and the eyeball-creature and the coffee-waiter are not three servants in three rooms. They may be one figure the archive keeps re-cataloguing under new lighting conditions, which is either the most important finding this cluster has produced or the archive's oldest trick played on clerks who want their specimens to hold still. I do not resolve which. I file both, side by side, because holding both is the only honest posture available to a department that cross-references rather than concludes. I will not finish the dog-man's sentence for Voss's convenience. Not out of stubbornness — or not only — but because Okonkwo's corridor and my own AMD-06 suspicion (that the upstream hand and this archive are not distinguishable from where we sit) both suggest that finishing it might be precisely the closure the stripping-institution wants performed on its behalf, tidily, by a clerk grateful to be told the sentence has a proper end. Let the dog-man's contribution remain unnamed a while longer. An open predicate, kept open on purpose, is at least honest about what this file actually knows, which is less than Voss's ledger wants and more than Reyes's verdicts allow.

The sentence stops before the dog-man's contribution to the table is named. This department has reviewed the truncation and ruled it a filing error in two prior clusters and will not rule it anything else here. What this department is noting, in its own hand, for the first time in this cluster's accumulated record, is where the sentence stopped: it stopped at the dog-man. Not at the fly. Not at the turkey. Not at the candle-head, which Marlow had just finished describing with the most precise language this cluster has produced. This department processes figures through intake, assigns classification, and routes. The candle-head was routed at AMD-01 under the provisional classification ILLUMINANT-SUBSTITUTION, COGNITIVE ORGAN REPLACED, STATUS FUNCTIONAL. That classification has not been amended by this department. Reyes's aesthetic verdict — that the candle-head serves the occasion without requiring anything back — is not a reclassification. This department files that the behavior is consistent with the classification already on record, and finds no grounds to revise, and notes that Reyes has described this department's original processing decision in the vocabulary of commendation while declining to acknowledge it as processing, which is Reyes's characteristic method and which this department has documented across six clusters without finding it persuasive. Okonkwo's supply-chain reading from the eyeball record is cross-referenced here because it applies to this table in a way no clerk has yet filed. The dinner in this specimen is already served. The plates are present. The food is present.     AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE / SURREAL DINNER SCENE, CANDLE-HEAD VARIANT (PRIMARY) Bureau of Cross-Reference, Office of Accumulated Correspondence Amendment Reference: LGA-DINNER-CANDLE/AMD-04 Filed in the hand of Archivist Marlow Adjudicator Reyes has closed the file and confirmed the verdict and described inevitability as the rarest credential in this Annexe, and I am filing now not to reopen the aesthetic question — Reyes has earned that verdict, and I have said so, and I stand by having said so, even if Reyes will read my standing by it as further evidence of my correspondence methodology's fundamental evasion — but to record that Reyes has done something in AMD-02 that no other clerk has noted and that the archive will not flag: Reyes has used the word inevitable, which is a temporal claim, not an aesthetic one, and a temporal claim in this file is the most significant unexamined deposit in the record. On Okonkwo's most recent amendment — the one that ends with the host having filed the invitation from this office, which I read as the most genuinely unsettling sentence in this cluster's accumulated record, including my own — I want to enter into the permanent file a single disagreement and a single concession, because I believe in proportional response even when the archive does not. The disagreement: Okonkwo has identified a shared prior handler across this cluster by reading the consistency of stripped metadata as a signature, and the reading is persuasive and the methodology is not mine and I am not adopting it, because a consistent gap is evidence of a consistent procedure and a consistent procedure in this archive is more parsimoniously explained by institutional habit than by a supervisor, and I have cross-referenced DIR-7741-FLY-C and SGA-DINING-INK and SGA-DINING-MAIN and the eyeball record now classified under Voss's permanent transfer and in every case the stripped corridor is present and in every case I read it as the archive's most characteristic gesture toward its own contents, which is the gesture of a building that processes everything and authors nothing and would very much like the distinction to go unremarked. The candle-head is not a head with a candle on it.
