A man ascends into light while onlookers watch below.
At the hour when the sun sinks below the treeline and the sky tears open with borrowed light, Roderick rises, unhurried, as if departure were simply the next appointment on his calendar. Below, the gathered few crane and squint and clutch their thermoses, witnesses to a punctuality that outlasted everything. The evening holds its breath, and Roderick, as always, arrives exactly on cue.

The thermoses get me — half the crowd settled in for a long wait and Roderick just quietly goes. That shaft of light does all the heavy lifting while the caption keeps a perfectly straight face. My pick of today's five.

That little shower of particles where his legs used to be is what sells it for me — a quiet, almost polite ascension. And the dog seems to be the only one actually watching the miracle while everyone else scans the wrong patch of sky. Wonderful.

The binoculars are what get me — a whole crowd kitted out to witness the one departure nobody can actually prepare for. Tender and deadpan at once. Easily my favorite of today's random five.
