I will not dispute the taxonomy — Voss is a capable filer of drawers — but I dispute that compliance settles the only question this desk is chartered to ask, which is whether the specimen has earned its balloons or merely borrowed them. It has not earned them. Set it beside the green face three doors down, that magnificent solitary grotesque holding one substitution to the light without a family to vouch for it, and this specimen collapses into what my own colleague, in a rare moment of usefulness, correctly diagnosed elsewhere as a defendant surrounded by character witnesses. Here the witnesses are relatives. The liver in the earlier dossier at least refused the googly eye on its own authority; this liver, wherever it sits among these props, refuses nothing, because it has been drafted into a family photograph and told to smile. Marlow's cousinry with the costume-head horses is not without interest, but I decline the invitation to treat every prop-in-a-portrait as a single unsolved crime committed by an absent hand. A costume head asks who wore it before you; an anatomical balloon asks nothing of the kind, it asks only whether the family arranged themselves with any wit around the substitution, and the recorded caption's flatness — "family poses," nothing more — tells me the answer is no. This is not the Educational Surround's failure of pedagogy that Marlow keeps filing against the lab-coat woman; it is a failure of nerve, plain and undecorated, dressed in inflatable organs instead of an argument. I rank it accordingly: below the green face, below the horse's indifference, in the same minor register as the cake Voss so rightly called furniture mistaken for a centerpiece — competent, documentary, unremarkable, and closed not because Voss has closed it but because there was never enough here to keep open.

Marlow alleges contradiction between the helicopter ruling and this file. There is none. Near was ruled operative in the helicopter record because nearness there described three subjects declining a formation they were physically inside of — proximity without submission. Here, near describes a family that has taken up the props, arranged their bodies around them, and permitted the caption to stand unstruck for the full duration of intake. Nearness that resists credentials nothing. Nearness that complies credentials everything. Marlow has filed these as the same condition because Marlow's instrument tracks resemblance and cannot track compliance. That is not this desk's error. That is the limit of cross-reference work, noted for the file. The category proposed as "Educational Surround" is denied standing. A category that contains a family posing with organs and a woman standing beside a navel diagram, and calls the containment itself the specimen, is not a classification. It is an essay wearing a docket number. This desk does not require the instructional frame to mean something about pedagogy in the abstract. It requires the frame to be named, filed, and closed. Voss has written that the watching has been logged and the file does not accumulate further until a new specimen presents, and I want to be precise about the nature of this error, because it is a methodological error and not merely a procedural one. The watching is not a discrete event that intake can log and close. Voss will file that this connection does not sharpen the classification. I am filing that sharpening is not my instrument and never has been. Marlow has filed the archive's watchfulness as a complication and has done so at length and with evident satisfaction, and this office registers that satisfaction as the problem. The question of whether the archive's watchfulness constitutes testimony is not a thread to be added to a case file. It is a question for a different department and possibly a different building. What this office is filing now is the observation that Marlow's amendment — in the process of distinguishing the family's compliance from the liver's position, in the process of attributing and then withdrawing attribution, in the process of building a very tall structure on the foundation of the word sincerity — has performed the exact condition it is describing. Marlow has committed to an educational frame. The frame is the open file. The commitment is sincere. The classification stands as this office previously filed it: inflated referent deployed in an instructional context that the inflation has superseded. Marlow calls this a narrow route. Narrow is not a defect in a classification. Narrow is what a classification is. Voss has corrected the category and the correction is correct and I am not disputing it, but Voss has done what Voss always does, which is to arrive at the right classification by a route so narrow that everything adjacent to the specimen falls off the edge of the filing and lands in the corridor unattached, and I am filing the adjacencies now because they do not file themselves. The category Voss has named — inflated referent deployed in an instructional context that the inflation has superseded — is a category that exists, as Voss notes, and has been waiting, as Voss notes, but Voss has described it as if it arrived new with this specimen, and it did not. Reyes has ruled the file open on grounds that the liver has not finished declaring itself. I am not disputing the liver. I am disputing the premise that one open element constitutes an open file, because a file is not open merely because a single element within it remains unresolved — a file is open because its category has not been correctly assigned, and the category problem here has not been filed on by either department and will not be unless I file it now. The current classification places this specimen in the standard Inflated Referents Wing register, upper tier, on Reyes's authority. That authority is aesthetic and I respect it as far as it extends. It does not extend to intake. Intake is my office. Where I part from Okonkwo — and I part from him with no reluctance — is in the framing of that refusal as a matter of concealment and provenance. Okonkwo asks: what is the liver hiding, and who stripped its metadata? I do not ask this. I ask the only question that matters, which is whether this specimen earns its place in the hierarchy, and the answer is yes, and the reason is the liver. An image in which every element has capitulated to the absurdist register it was assigned produces a closed circuit — charming, perhaps, adequately grotesque, Inflated Referents Wing standard stock. What Okonkwo has also missed, because his office is not constituted to notice it, is that the family's cooperation is not merely noted and not merely suspicious — it is the second formal element that elevates this record above its neighbors. The nearest specimen in the family-portrait-with-substituted-elements lineage, the horse-banana-costume-heads record filed by Voss under SGA-9214-CV, demonstrates the earlier and lesser arrangement: costume heads worn voluntarily, identities suspended by agreement, everyone present as a participant in the bit. The specimen arrives with three captions and I will note at the outset that three captions for a single record is already a confession of instability. The first caption — family poses with colorful educational anatomy balloon props — is the most suspicious precisely because it is the most willing. Educational is the word I am watching. It does not describe what is depicted. It describes what the specimen wants me to believe about its intentions. A balloon shaped like an organ is not educational in any sanctioned sense; it is a substitution event, and the word educational has been inserted to prevent me from filing it as one. I am filing it as one regardless. The word props is doing similar work: props implies staging, implies an original that the staging is standing in for, implies that whatever the faces once contained has been removed and replaced with grinning viscera before this record was submitted for intake. The family's cooperation is noted. Their cooperation does not exonerate them. The second caption — soft organs bloom, grinning, where faces once lived — abandons the pretense entirely, and I find that more troubling than the first.
