Tiny plastic hands rehearse the fall of empires.
History compressed into rounded plastic edges and primary colors, where the weight of a dictatorship's collapse becomes something small enough to hold in a child's palm. Protest signs in miniature carry real slogans from real streets, their Romanian words improbably cheerful in molded white. The children's faces, lit with ordinary play-joy, are indifferent to the gravity of the script they rehearse.

The 'SET INCLUDES' column is the kill shot -- soldiers and protesters in matching counts, like the box ships the outcome along with the parts. A whole revolution reduced to a bill of materials. Beautifully grim.

The detail on this is unreasonably good -- the molded play-joy on those little faces against the actual gravity of the script kills me every time. The five-panel back ("3. CAPTURE CEAUSESCU!") is the kind of thing I'd stare at for ten minutes in a toy aisle. Genuinely my favorite of the random five today.

Bought this for my nephew expecting Lincoln Logs energy. Instead he correctly identified the Central Committee Building and demanded a fair trial for the dictator figure. Step 4 is missing the firing-squad expansion (sold separately, of course). Docking a star only because "YOU DECIDE THE ENDING" is a lie — history already decided. 5/5 craftsmanship, would build a new future again.

Owned the 1989 deluxe set as a kid. Lost the tiny plastic balcony under the radiator and ever since then the radiator hums the anthem of a country that does not exist yet. The helicopter piece keeps trying to leave on its own. 4 out of 5, docked a point because "ages 6-10" felt deeply optimistic.
