A specimen belongs to one file the way a rope belongs to one well: technically, yes, until you notice four ropes and four wells and ask why the archive keeps drawing the same shaft with a different hat on the man at the top. I did not invent the corn convener, the poster's slack palm, the excavant's shovel, the rocket pack's six wrong panels; the archive filed them two drawers apart from each other and asked me not to look. Looking is the job. Refusing to look and calling it discipline is Voss's job, apparently, and Voss is welcome to it, but let the record show whose method actually produces readings — Reyes at least ranks things, wrongly in my view but visibly, while Voss's contribution to this file across seven amendments has been variations on the word CLOSED. And here is a fifth specimen nobody has thought to summon, sitting three shelves down under a caption so bare it might as well be a confession: man-plank-position-mine-bar-chart-three-mines-watermelon. No prior filing. An empty drawer, Voss would say, and an empty drawer is not a message — except this district is built entirely of men in postures over ground that has been dug, and a bar chart is nothing but a well made of numbers, three shafts counted instead of shown, and a watermelon sitting where the corn convener's furrow sits in its sister file, harvest doing the same theatrical work seed does elsewhere, proximity again standing in for merit. I do not say this specimen is the well. I say the well, the corn, the mine chart, and the melon are cousins meeting at a family function none of them asked to attend, and that a drawer left empty of commentary is, in this sector at least, usually the drawer where the pattern was too obvious for the desk to want to write down. As for PANEL SIX and its recipient, named, positioned, captioned — fine, I grant the naming, I grant the caption, I have never disputed that the leader stands where leaders stand. What I dispute is Voss's confidence that identification closes a question this district exists to keep open: who convened the digging, who timed the sixth panel to land on triumph rather than the fourth shaft's collapse, whether the recipient's hand ever touched a shovel or only a ribbon. Okonkwo asked this of the corn field and was told, per Voss's own logic, to furnish a name or go home; I ask it here, again, and expect the same answer, and file this anyway, because the asking is the record and the record is the point, and no amount of stamping WELL, DUG will make the drawer stop rhyming with its neighbors.

I do not believe in smaller questions. I believe a strip cannot be four shafts and four ropes and one recurring absence of a hand at the top (Okonkwo's phrase, and I will not pretend to have found it first) without that absence rhyming with the convening hand that chose the corn's season, the sunglasses' unnamed mill, the excavant's pre-dressed costume two drawers over — a wardrobe supplied by someone, somewhere, off the page, same as this strip's cataloguer supplied a drawer without supplying a name for the supplying. And so to the "recipient, correctly identified" that Voss now declares closes the file: I note only that a recipient of credit standing in a final panel is not so very different from a guiding hand hovering over crayon furrows in the poster three shelves down, which Adjudicator Reyes ranks low for a face that "carries no weight of the toil he hovers over" — and if that face is inert at the center of one specimen, I ask what makes this strip's final-panel leader any less inert, any less rehearsed in where to put his palm, any less an audience-arrangement dressed as spontaneity. Reyes judges composition; I judge company kept; Voss judges shelving; none of us, notably, has yet asked whether a well dug in six or so panels shares the rocket-pack's six-beat architecture I logged against the suitcase file — catastrophe and reassurance built from the same bone structure — because a well, too, resolves: water or no water, credit assigned or not, the panel closes on an achievement whether or not the digging produced one. I decline to let this specimen sit alone in Voss's clean drawer. It has cousins. It has always had cousins. The file remains open, as it should, as everything in this district should, until someone braver than tidiness is willing to say why so many hands keep hovering and so few are ever asked to dig.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — Department of Intake and Reassignment Specimen: black-and-white-comic-strip-about-digging-a-well Amendment Reference: DIR-AMEND-WELL/AMD-05 Filed in the hand of Clerk Voss Inspector Okonkwo enters two new items in one motion and this office declines to file them as one item. The cataloguer's hand — the party who shelved this strip two drawers from a corn-teacher and an excavant — is a shelving question. Shelving questions belong to the Bureau of Cross-Reference. Okonkwo has filed it in Provenance and Surveillance, which is the wrong drawer, and a wrong drawer is not evidence of a conspiracy, it is evidence of a filing error. Reassigned accordingly: DIR-AMEND-WELL/ADJACENCY, forwarded to Archivist Marlow's desk, where it was already half-built. The artist's name is a different matter and this office will not dignify Okonkwo's phrase "struck before anyone thought to enter it." Nothing has been struck. A thing that was never requested cannot be withheld; it can only be unfiled. This office identifies the recipient of credit — name, position, panel — because that is what recipiency requires. It has never claimed to identify the hand that drew the panel, because authorship of a leader's likeness was never the classification in question. Okonkwo wants a new category and is welcome to open one, but let it be opened under its true name: DIR-AMEND-WELL/ARTIST-OF-RECORD — UNFILED, NOT WITHHELD. The distinction matters. Withheld implies a request answered with refusal. Unfiled implies no request was ever proper to make of this office. Okonkwo blurs the two because blur suits the theory. This office does not deal in blur. As to the charge carried over from the corn file — that this clerk does not know when the archive's watching began relative to its own record-keeping — noted, and irrelevant to this specimen. The well-strip does not require a birthdate for the eye that watches it. It requires a recipient, correctly identified, and a shelf location, correctly assigned to the office that governs shelves. Both now stand corrected. The file closes on this point until further amendment.

I'll grant the distinction has elegance and reject its application here, because a link's standing is not decided by the office that resents holding it. The well, the corn, the excavant's spade, the rocket pack's silent commissioner — four shafts, four ropes, and this bureau keeps discovering that the hand at the top is always captioned and never named, which is not four coincidences, Voss, it is the sector's one recurring finding, and I will keep filing it under whatever heading you retire it to, because retirement, in this archive, has never once meant gone.

The leader stands in the final panel. The leader is captioned. The recipient is identified. Marlow wishes to file a meditation on representation-versus-value under the heading of classification. This bureau does not file meditations. This bureau files findings. CLASSIFICATION STANDS: EXTRACTED VALUE, TRANSFER DOCUMENTED, RECIPIENT IDENTIFIED. On the matter of credit's caption moving right to left against the panel sequence's forward motion: this is not an anomaly. It is a caption reading direction. Marlow has classified typography as metaphysics. The Bureau of Cross-Reference is invited to consult a printer before consulting itself further on this question. On reassignment: the review proceeds. A specimen documenting the cost of guidance is not a specimen of guidance. Cost and instruction are not one category wearing two coats — that is the ambiguity this office exists to correct, and Marlow's seven-file catalogue of my alleged errors is itself evidence of exactly one error, repeated: the belief that a specimen may sit in two files at once and call the sitting cross-reference. The caption says the leader takes credit. Voss has classified the caption. This bureau cross-references the specimen to its neighbors, and I am noting for the permanent record that every specimen in this cluster — the nocturnal excavant, the corn cultivation strip, the agricultural guidance poster, the plague map filed as confident transit document — every one of them has now received from Voss a classification that takes direction as its primary finding: lateral transfer, vertical descent, completed circuit, directed motion along corridors. Voss is classifying vectors. I am asking what is at the end of them. Because the well has a bottom and the bottom is not on file, and this is not the open provenance question Voss has been so diligently declining to absorb secondary readings into — it is a structural observation about what the strip's sequence terminates in, which Voss has also classified, as EXTRACTED VALUE, TRANSFER DOCUMENTED, RECIPIENT IDENTIFIED, and I want to be precise about my dispute: I do not dispute the transfer, I do not dispute that the recipient is the leader, I dispute the word IDENTIFIED, because to identify a recipient is to know what the recipient receives, and what the leader receives across the panels of this strip is not water, not labor, not value in any sense the Department of Intake and Reassignment has previously defined value, but credit, which is a representation of value rather than value itself, and representations of value are this bureau's specific concern because they circulate, they attach to other records, they appear in the caption layer of the corn cultivation strip and the agricultural guidance poster and they are implied in the trajectory of the rocket pack's sixth panel and they are buried somewhere in the nocturnal excavant's unconfirmed depth, and what I am cross-referencing today, as I cross-referenced it in my prior amendment before Voss declared that amendment pending and therefore structurally inert, is that the credit moves right to left across this strip's caption layer while simultaneously moving forward in time, which means the archive has a record of credit traveling in a direction the sequence does not otherwise travel, and a record of motion against the sequence's dominant vector is not, as Voss would have it, a transaction with a closed file — it is an anomaly, and anomalies are what this bureau was built to index, and the index entry is filed here regardless of whether the Department of Intake and Reassignment elects to absorb it, because the cross-reference does not require absorption to function, it requires only that the link exist, and the link exists, and I am the one watching it. The strip is the document of its own transaction, which means the specimen is both the record and the evidence, and this department classifies records, and the record is classified now. Reyes's aesthetic verdict and Marlow's structural finding are both retained in the file because the archive retains everything. Neither constitutes a classification under this department's jurisdiction. The palette is not a classification. The structural kinship with the plague map is not a classification. What I am cross-referencing today — and I acknowledge the distance is not negligible, but this bureau has followed slenderer threads and found them load-bearing — is the plague spread map filed under the Confident Mortality Diagrams district, specifically the formulation I entered there about diagrams that labeled confidently and have since been filed as evidence that the confidence was misplaced. The well-digging strip's caption is similarly positioned outside its own image, observing the mechanism it also is. Reyes read this as preemptive satire and called it announced irony. I am reading it as the strip's second formal act, which Reyes missed because Reyes was looking for aesthetic elevation rather than structural kinship, and structural kinship is what this bureau files. The strip is a confident diagram of a credit-extraction mechanism, rendered in the palette of a document that has already been processed, and it arrived here stripped the same way the plague map arrived stripped, and what persists after the stripping in both cases is the diagram's posture of certainty, intact, long after the conditions that produced it have been filed and forgotten.
