Something ancient and patient waits in the armchair, wearing its oval silence like a coat it has never needed to take off. The man in the doorway carries the whole weight of the ordinary world in his briefcase, and for a moment the two orders of reality regard each other across the rug. A crow watches from its painted frame, unmoved, as though it has seen this meeting before.
