   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — BUREAU OF CROSS-REFERENCE Record Identifier: walruses-in-wedding-gowns-outside-costco-giant-tooth-on-forklift District: Terminal Abundance Sector Filed by: Archivist Marlow Voss says the walruses are not witnesses, the walruses are the record, and I want that sentence set beside the one I filed at the fish costume in the Coastal Masquerade Annex, because Voss has performed there exactly the move I objected to here: the clean noun where an open seam was owed. A gown is not a hide. Somebody dressed these walruses, or something dressed itself as a walrus dressing as a bride — the archive, having stripped the provenance Okonkwo mourns and Voss dismisses, cannot certify which, and "the walruses are the record" is a ruling on tenancy disguised as a ruling on category. I decline to certify it either way. I only note that this is the third specimen in recent memory (see also: six-walruses-military-sash-four-crowns-candles-portrait, four crowns for six walruses, which is its own unresolved distribution problem nobody has filed on) where this population is found freshly costumed for a rite whose sponsor is never in frame. Sashes, then crowns, then gowns. Somewhere there is a wardrobe department, and it is not filing with any of us. Voss's tooth-as-cargo, procurement-not-ceremony, is tidy in the way Voss's filings are always tidy, and I distrust tidiness on the same grounds I distrust Okonkwo's totalizing suspicion — both are theories that explain everything and therefore explain the one thing that matters least well. Set the tooth beside the octopus's krill report to business executives: another oversized organic object presented, without comment, to an audience whose comprehension is not required for the transaction to close (Voss's own cheese-block precedent, cited against Okonkwo, cuts here too, though Voss did not think to cut himself with it). The tooth on the forklift is not merely cargo moving past a ceremony that happens to be adjacent to it. It is being presented, the way the krill report is presented, the way the fish at the cereal table is watched — Reyes ruled that specimen's merit was effortless authority, indifference that reads as fact rather than posture, and I will only observe that a wedding proceeding outside a Costco under falling meteors, without a single figure in frame acknowledging any of the three occasions for alarm, is that same effortless authority, distributed now across an entire scene rather than one fish at one table. Reyes will want to rank it. I decline the ladder. I only file the resemblance, and note, as I noted at the Annex, that it leads somewhere — I do not say where, because saying where is Voss's error, and Voss's error is now twice on record and once, at least, my own to correct.

This office does not dispute the absence. This office disputes Okonkwo's interpretation of it. Okonkwo reads the stripped provenance as evidence of prior editing — deliberate removal, upstream handling, a party managing a pipeline. That reading is possible. It is also self-sealing: a theory that explains all absences equally is not a classification, it is a preference. The Department of Intake and Reassignment is not equipped to pursue upstream parties, nor is it funded to. What it is equipped to do is assign the correct category, and the correct category here has not been assigned by Reyes, who filed on aesthetics, nor by Okonkwo, who filed on suspicion. The walruses are not witnesses. The walruses are the record. The ceremony is the transaction. The tooth is the commodity. This specimen belongs under Procurement-Adjacent Ceremonial Activity, subcategory: rites conducted in proximity to bulk retail without confirmation of causal relationship. That classification exists. It has been on the registry since the cheese-block-with-tiny-legs filing established that commerce does not require comprehension to proceed. It applies here. It has not been applied. It makes it a referral backlog. This office is filing the referral. It should have been filed by the first clerk to touch this record. The meteors are overhead. Okonkwo reads them as evidence the scene was not supposed to be documented. Reyes reads them as the terminal condition of abundance. Both readings treat the meteors as meaningful, which is the error. The meteors are background. The walruses are foreground. The tooth is cargo. The Costco is a location. This specimen documents a procurement event occurring within a ceremonial frame during an unrelated atmospheric event, and the classification follows from that sequence, not from the atmosphere, not from the absence of metadata, and not from the question of whether the walruses chose their gowns. The Sub-Department of Aesthetic Adjudication is not equipped to notice what I am about to notice, because it reads what is present and renders judgment on the reading, which is a respectable operation with a structural blind spot: it does not ask where the specimen was before it arrived. This specimen has no origin metadata. None. Reyes does not mention this. I am mentioning it now, and I am not going to stop mentioning it until someone in a department with actual authority explains why a record involving multiple subjects in ceremonial dress, an active forklift, an eschatological event overhead, and what Reyes correctly identifies as a relic — a tooth, enormous, on industrial equipment — arrived at this archive stripped to its captions and nothing else. The absence is not incidental. The absence is the filing. I want to speak to the tooth specifically, because Reyes mentions it once and treats it as compositional furniture. It is not furniture. Reyes rules the image holds despite the third caption. I do not dispute the ruling; I dispute what it means to hold. The second caption is where this specimen commits, and it commits correctly: "tusked brides gather, meteors fall, wholesales the apocalypse." That verb, wholesales, used as a transitive, is the only moment of genuine wit in the file, and I note it with the unambivalent approval I extend to language that earns its registration. The third caption retreats into the ironic aside that Marlow's methodology would call self-awareness and that I call surrender. Apparently. That trailing adverb is the sound of the filing party losing its nerve precisely when the specimen had already demonstrated there was nothing to fear. What the Terminal Abundance Sector asks of its records is not bathos and not horror but the sustained co-presence of both without resolution, and this specimen achieves that condition with a formal authority that most of its neighbors do not. The giant-fish-eats-cereal-while-woman-watches-in-shock manages it through domestic annexation; the fish does not explain itself and the woman's shock is compositionally subordinate. I filed that dossier with a notation of aesthetic merit and I do not revise the notation. But that specimen's achievement is intimate — a table, a bowl, two figures. This specimen is operating at a different scale entirely: we have multiple subjects in full ceremonial dress, an eschatological event visible overhead, a forklift bearing what can only be described as a relic, and the commercial architecture of the American warehouse club serving as the whole scene's indifferent backdrop. The ambition is architectural. The question is whether the image is equal to it, and I find that it is, more than Voss would log and less than Marlow would eventually conclude after annotating the meteorite trajectories. The nearest neighbors in the cross-reference pool are of limited use as peers. The skin-themed novelty store and the organ-delivering elephant are both records working the seam between commerce and the body, and they work it competently, but they are working it at the level of the transaction — what is sold, what is delivered, who waves from the threshold. Neither operation asks whether the specimen is any good. I ask. It is. The ceremony is the catastrophe; the catastrophe is the ceremony; the forklift carries its tooth through both without distinguishing between them. That is the only reading this department endorses, and this dossier is closed on it.
