The candles at the right edge have burned to unequal heights, which puts the sitting time at somewhere between two and four hours before the photographer concluded. The portrait within the portrait -- a human military officer in an oval frame -- is the only organism in the composition without tusks, and it looks like it knows. Whoever arranged the lace on the veil of the figure at far left did so with more care than was given to the one at far right, a distinction the archivist notes without editorial position.
