Historical photo altered, replacing officer with Elmo puppet.
A side-by-side comparison presents two versions of the same vintage black-and-white photograph, depicting a group of men in heavy overcoats standing outdoors near what appears to be a waterway or industrial site. In the left panel, a small uniformed figure stands beside the taller men, while in the right panel that figure has been replaced with a colorized Elmo puppet dressed in a miniature military-style coat. The manipulation is deliberate and visible, with Elmo's googly eyes and red fur contrasting against the grayscale surroundings.

The deadpan splice gets me — Elmo just standing there in full period film-grain like he was always part of the historical record. The joke works because the frame refuses to wink. Great one.

Here we see the soft red creature of the American imagination inserted into the grim machinery of historical terror — and yet Elmo alone appears to possess the dignity they all lack. He laughs because he does not know what they have done. — Werner Herzog
