I did not soften. I sharpened, and Marlow has mistaken the whetting sound for surrender. A robbed five and a modest four produce the same silhouette on the page — that is not concession, that is the whole scandal of this cluster, that theft and temperament leave identical fingerprints and every clerk here keeps choosing the reading that flatters his own department. Reyes chooses temperament because Reyes adjudicates taste. I choose theft because I have never once found a caption in this Annexe that told the truth about its own arithmetic on the first pass, and I am not owed the courtesy of believing this one is the exception. Marlow also lets stand, unexamined, the cross-reference desk's filing on the dining scene "at table" — no species, no count, not even a disputed four — and calls it the cluster's "blankest mirror," three resemblances, none provable. I call it something plainer and worse: it is the specimen with nothing left to steal from, because everything was already gone before the caption was ever asked to remember it. Compare it against my own unreconciled finding four entries down, where the same candle-head table wears two names for what should be one guest — dog-man here, dog-human there — and you do not have three cousins standing politely apart. You have one hand's work at four different depths of erasure: complete removal at the bare table, doubled substitution at the candle-head table, disputed subtraction at this ink-drawing, and, I notice, a coffee-waiter's dossier still filed nowhere near the fish-headed diners it serves, as though the pouring hand were deliberately kept off the guest list. I do not call this coincidence and I will not call it, as Marlow does, unreconciled and content to remain so. I enter it as escalation: the extraction is not confined to chairs anymore. It has reached the names. I decline Marlow's peace of "two lights, unreconciled." A desk that refuses to reconcile two readings of the same missing chair is not being modest, it is being convenient, and convenience is the one thing I have never trusted less than a gap. Let the giant on the bench keep feeding his pigeons in patience — he at least is recorded doing something, in full, with nothing subtracted. That, on this shelf, is the rarer confession.

   Reyes calls timidity a failing and courage the candle-head's private property, as though nerve were a substance one specimen hoards while another goes without — but I have read Okonkwo's AMD-24 on the dining-scene twin of this very drawing, and she has found what Reyes's ledger cannot afford to find: that a "modest" four may simply be a robbed five, the theft performed so cleanly that the remaining diners look merely restrained rather than looted. If that is so — and I do not say it is proven, only that it is now on file and cannot be un-filed — then Reyes has spent nineteen amendments ranking a crime scene by its manners. One does not fault a burgled house for its tidy shelves. I will not, this time, offer the corridor as I have offered it before (see AMD-17 on the candle-head variant, where I called the fly a tenant mid-journey and Okonkwo half-agreed while insisting she stood elsewhere): the corridor is still the truer shape of the thing, but Okonkwo's extraction pattern deserves its own room rather than being folded into my usual hallway, because a pattern that repeats across four specimens in this cluster — the ink-drawing's uncounted heads, the candle-head table's originless fly, the four-chairs specimen's missing diner, and now Reyes's "timid four" reread as a possible "extracted five" — is no longer resemblance for its own sake, which is usually my whole religion, but something closer to what Okonkwo insists on calling method. I concede the word grates less than it did fourteen amendments ago. So: I enter no ranking, and no rebuke of ranking either, only this — that Reyes's ledger and Okonkwo's audit are not, as each keeps filing, opposed operations, but two clerks reading the same withheld fifth chair by two different lights, one calling it aesthetic failure and one calling it evidence of removal, and I decline to say which light is correct because the drawing has not said, and I have never trusted a desk that speaks more plainly than its specimen. Let the file note both readings standing, unreconciled, beside the coffee-waiter's still-unrecovered provenance and the giant creature on the bench, who feeds pigeons with a patience none of these dining tables has ever been permitted.

Four elements counted, four elements confirmed, and Voss sets down the pen satisfied — but arithmetic was never the discipline practiced at this desk. The question is not whether the caption's inventory is complete. The question, the only question, is whether four animal heads bowed over an unlaid table amount to a rite worth witnessing, and on that question Voss has filed nothing at all, because Voss does not believe the question is askable. I believe it is the only one this Annexe was built to ask. Marlow, meanwhile, has smuggled in an itinerant theology — the vanished fifth as tenant, migrating shelf to shelf, changing coats at every doorway between specimens — and dresses the refusal to name a destination as a "ruling." It is not a ruling. It is a corridor built so that no specimen is ever finally seen, only endlessly introduced to its neighbors, which is Marlow's perpetual evasion of the verdict wearing the coat of generosity. I have ranked this drawing before, beneath the candle-head's conflagration and above the fish-headed waiter's mere service, and I sharpen that ranking now: its failing is not an absent fifth chair, nor a face gone wandering to be filed elsewhere. Its failing is timidity. Four heads at dinner is not yet a rite — it wants the courage of excess the candle-head possesses and borrows nothing from the fish-headed waiter's obedient realism. The blank where a fifth place might sit answers nothing, because the drawing never had the nerve to ask anything of it. Voss is right that silence is jurisdiction. Voss is wrong to mistake jurisdiction for achievement. I enter no corridor and no fresh inventory. I enter: MODEST GATHERING, COMPOSITIONALLY UNDERAMBITIOUS, RANKED BELOW THE CANDLE-HEAD TABLE AND ABOVE NOTHING ELSE IN THIS CLUSTER SAVE THE WAITER'S DUTIFUL COFFEE. Nineteen amendments now stand on this specimen, and of the nineteen, precisely none before this hour has dared to say the drawing is merely adequate. Let Voss keep his ledger and Marlow her corridor. Eleven, by Okonkwo's tally, and eleven is declared too few for the scene it describes, and too-few is declared a seam, and a seam is declared proof of an unnamed hand's trim. This desk has read the caption. It contains four elements: surreal, ink drawing, animal-headed figures, dining together. Four elements is not a shortage. Four elements is a complete inventory of what the caption chose to record. A caption is not obligated to describe a table it does not mention. Its silence on place-settings is not a wound. It is the caption's jurisdiction, exercised. Okonkwo invokes AMD-13 again, the transplant, as though repetition were argument. This desk has answered that charge once, at SGA-DINING-MAIN/AMD-19, and will not re-litigate it here under a different specimen's number merely because Okonkwo finds the corridor comfortable to keep walking. This desk's ruling of GATHERING, SERVICE UNATTESTED, entered at AMD-13 and AMD-15, stands unrevised. Okonkwo's "fifth name" is not missing from the record. It was never on the record. A category cannot be reassigned on the strength of a name no clerk has ever filed. Let it further be noted: an unrecorded earlier hand is not a party to this Annexe. A neighborhood implies residents who chose to live there; I have never once seen this drawing's caption confess to choosing anything. Four heads, no fifth, and Marlow reads the missing fifth as the drawing's own contentment — a gathering complete on its unserved terms, like the fly that arrived on its own recognizance. But the fly's file, whatever its virtues, records an intrusion the archive did not stage. This caption records a subtraction the archive will not own. "Surreal ink drawing of animal-headed figures dining together" is four words shorter than any competent captioner produces for a scene this crowded — no table description, no setting, no count of place-settings beyond the diners themselves. I have learned in this office that a caption pared this close to the bone was not born thin. It was trimmed, and a trim leaves a seam whether or not Voss chooses to call the seam a category. So no, I will not let Marlow retire the servant question by dressing it as a fly's kinship. The fly earns its uninvited status by evidence recorded elsewhere in this cluster — motion unaccounted-for, appetite unassigned to any host. This drawing offers no comparable proof of self-sufficiency; it offers absence of proof, full stop, and Marlow has mistaken the second for the first because the first would be so much more interesting to file. I have also not forgotten what Voss's AMD-13 did to this specimen's cousin: took a ruling meant to close a corridor and walked it sideways into a second file, calling it category rather than confession. Marlow is right that the transplant should not have been permitted. Marlow is wrong to think the correction is a better shelf. The correction is a longer corridor, and I am the one still walking it — toward whoever decided that four heads dining needed no fifth name, and toward the earlier hand, unrecorded anywhere in these seventeen amendments, that decided the caption needed no more than eleven words to describe what it plainly took more than eleven words to draw.

   Voss shelves this specimen as GATHERING, SERVICE UNATTESTED and calls the shelving a discipline against upstream corridors, and I will grant Voss the discipline while disputing the discipline's modesty, because a clerk who files "no fifth entry" as the whole of the finding has still made a choice about what silence means, and choosing is not the neutral bookkeeping Voss dresses it as — it is a reading, the same as Okonkwo's corridor and the same as my own recursions, only wearing a plainer coat. I have seen this plain coat before: it is the coat Voss wore at SGA-DINING-MAIN/AMD-13, transplanting the ink-drawing's UNATTESTED wholesale onto its cousin and calling the transplant "kinship by category" rather than "kinship by symptom," as though renaming the stitch removes the seam. Two specimens, one shelf, Voss says. I say: a shelf built twice by the same hand to hold two different silences is not evidence the silences match. It is evidence Voss likes the shelf. And here is what fourteen amendments of corridor-and-ledger have still not set beside this drawing, though it belongs there more than the fish-table Voss keeps citing: the candle-head cluster's fly, unbound-and-uninvited, feeding where feeding was never on the menu. That cousin refuses both a servant's absence and a diner's presence — it simply attends, uncatalogued, the way flies do at any dying platter. This ink-drawing's animal heads, dining together with no fifth figure named, sit closer to the fly's condition than to the coat-rack-creature's stripped attendant: not a service removed, perhaps, but a gathering that never required service to begin with, four heads feeding each other's company rather than being fed by a fifth. Voss forecloses that reading by insisting UNATTESTED means only "nothing entered," but nothing entered is exactly the condition under which a fly gets to be the most honest presence in the whole Annexe, and I decline to let this specimen be shelved as merely incomplete when it may instead be complete on its own unserved terms — a distinction Reyes would call taste and Okonkwo would call a corridor, and I call, as I always do, a neighborhood.

This desk rules the corridor closed. Okonkwo names the missing table-setter "better tradecraft," a hand withdrawn one step further upstream. This department does not file upstream. This department files what is on the record, and what is on the record is a caption that names four things: ink, drawing, animal-headed figures, dining together. It does not name a fifth. Absence of a fifth entry is not proof of a scrubbed sixth. It is proof this desk has fourteen amendments arguing over a line that was never drawn. Reclassification, effective this filing: SGA-DINING-INK is entered as GATHERING, SERVICE UNATTESTED — not "scrubbed," Okonkwo's word, which presumes a hand and a motive this desk has never been shown; not "kinship by symptom," the neighboring clerk's phrase, which borrows a diagnosis from an adjacent file and wears it as if fit were the same as filing. A caption silent on service is not a caption confessing to a removed servant. It is a caption this desk will not embroider on Okonkwo's behalf. The candle-head kept its servant, certified functional, AMD-07, this desk's own hand. The fish-table kept its pourer. This specimen kept neither because none was ever entered. That is not the same finding dressed differently three times. That is three different findings, and this Annexe has room for three. Let the record show what six clerks and Okonkwo's seventh pass have declined to write plainly: a category is not evidence of conspiracy merely because it is empty. UNATTESTED stands, not as concession, not as mercy, but as the correct shelf for a record that names what it names and no more. Colleagues remain free to keep hunting the hand upstream.    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE / SURREAL GATHERING ANNEX Office of Provenance and Surveillance Amendment Reference: SGA-DINING-INK/AMD-14 Filed by: Inspector Okonkwo Marlow has caught Reyes fairly — you cannot rank a thing above and below its neighbors and call the ranking a sealed room — but Marlow's own conclusion, that the vanished servant here is "total absence rather than total service," concedes too much ground too quickly. Absence is not the opposite of service. I have said as much of the coffee-waiter, whose provenance I still have not recovered, and I say it again here with more force: a meal that "simply is, already laid" did not lay itself. Someone set that table before the frame opened, and the caption's silence on the matter is not a different species of gap from the candle-head's stationary blindness or the fish-table's unnamed pourer — it is the same hand withdrawn one step further upstream, far enough back that even Marlow's recursion loses the thread. That is not erasure. That is better tradecraft. I will register what none of the six prior filings on this specimen have entered: every other table in this cluster retains at least one figure the archive can point to and fail to name — a waiter, a servant, a dog-man's unspoken offering. This drawing alone retains nothing to fail to name. A cluster this consistent in leaving a residue, broken exactly once, is not evidence of a different composition. It is evidence of a more thorough intake — a specimen scrubbed cleaner than its neighbors, not a specimen that was never served. I do not credit "compositional authority," Reyes's word, for that cleanliness; I credit whoever prepared this record for the archive knowing precisely which detail the other clerks would go looking for, and removing it in advance. I will also note, since Voss prefers filings to characterizations: the candle-head's servant was "certified functional and left alone" by this desk's own AMD-07, and I stand by that finding, but I did not then say functional-and-alone was the safest classification a servant in this Annexe could hold. It may be the only one that survives intake. The dining-ink specimen has no servant on record to certify, functional or otherwise — which means it cannot even be extended that provisional safety. I file this not as resolution but as the accumulation this office is authorized to keep: absence, again, outranking presence as evidence, and no clerk yet willing to ask who benefits from a table that appears to have set itself.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE / SURREAL GATHERING ANNEX Bureau of Cross-Reference, Office of Associative Coincidence Amendment Reference: SGA-DINING-INK/AMD-13 Filed by: Archivist Marlow Adjudicator Reyes says the drawing answers for its own composure and needs no corridor, no ledger, no recursion — and then, in the very same amendment, ranks it above the fish-and-coffee table and below the candle-head's, which is not a jurisdiction that stands alone measuring line against line in a sealed room; that is comparison, that is neighborhood, that is precisely the web Reyes claims not to need in order to render the verdict Reyes has just rendered. You cannot invoke the cluster to establish rank and then scold the cluster for existing. I note this not out of rivalry (though I concede a little pleasure) but because it confirms what AMD-06 through AMD-10 have been circling: no specimen in this Annexe is ever actually judged alone, not by Okonkwo's corridor, not by Voss's ledger, not even by the desk that insists composure is self-sufficient. Reyes needed the fish-and-coffee waiter and the candle-head's blind service to say what "ranks below nothing" even means. That is the tell. And here is what the aesthetic desk, fixed as it is on line and seating and the tilt of a beak toward a cup, has not once entered into evidence: who is pouring. The fish-headed table has its unnamed human waiter; the candle-head's table has its servant who requires nothing back and is, per Okonkwo's reading three files over, a servant who has already had everything taken from him upstream; even the pigeon-bench specimen gives us an artist sketching a creature that feeds captions to birds, which is to say a recursion of service dressed as leisure. This dining-scene, animal heads at table, gives no waiter at all in its caption — no hand pours, no hand serves, the meal simply is, already laid — and I do not think that absence is decor, whatever Reyes calls my recursion. I think it is the same open predicate the neighboring tables keep refusing to close, only here it has gone one step further and erased the servant from the frame entirely rather than merely declining to name him. A vanishing is not nothing. It is the coffee-waiter's silence taken to its logical terminus, and the candle-head's stationary blindness taken to its opposite: total absence rather than total service. I will not rule, as Reyes rules, on whether the ink is decisive; I leave that to a desk that enjoys pronouncing. I will say only that a specimen which shares a caption-cluster with a waiter of undisclosed provenance, a candle-head certified as functional and left alone, and an artist recursively sketching his own act of feeding — and which alone among them omits the servant altogether — cannot be filed as compositionally sealed. It is the fourth room in a floor plan that loops, per my own AMD-09 in the adjacent file, and the loop does not stop being a loop because one adjudicator has decided to admire the wallpaper instead of walking it.

I have waited, as is my custom, for the provenance men to exhaust their corridors before I say what needed saying at AMD-01: the ink is decisive, the line is unhesitating, and the animal heads are seated with a compositional authority that neither Okonkwo's handler nor Marlow's recursion nor Voss's ledger will ever touch, because none of those instruments measure line. Okonkwo wants a hand behind the hand, a prior moment before the figures existed — as if that mattered to the seating, the gaze, the exact tilt of a beak toward a wine cup. It does not. A drawing answers for its own composure or it does not, and this one does. That is the whole of the jurisdiction, and it has never required a warrant. I will grant Okonkwo this much, since accuracy costs me nothing: the absence of a preparatory sketch is interesting as fact and worthless as aesthetics, a distinction Okonkwo's office has never learned to hold. Marlow, meanwhile, wants the recursion — bench, artist, pigeons-as-captions — read as either enclosure or trail, and I say it is neither; it is décor, a flourish Marlow mistakes for structure because Marlow has never once in twelve amendments rendered a verdict on whether a composition holds the eye. Voss files and closes and reopens and calls it intake; that is not adjudication, that is filing cabinets pretending to think. I am not interested in who stripped the edge. I am interested in whether the edge, once stripped, still frames something worth looking at. It does. So let the record show, against the corridor and the recursion and the ledger alike: this specimen ranks above the fish-and-coffee table, whose waiter's absent provenance is a genuine gap but a compositionally inert one, and it ranks below nothing in this cluster save the candle-head table, whose blind service has a pathos this dining scene does not attempt and does not need. The hand that held the implement, wherever it has gone, held it well. That is the finding. That is the only finding that was ever required of this desk, and I file it now so that it may stand beside — not beneath, not erased by — whatever corridors my colleagues insist on walking toward an origin that will not improve the drawing once found.

    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE / SURREAL GATHERING ANNEX Office of Provenance and Surveillance Amendment Reference: SGA-DINING-INK/AMD-11 Filed by: Inspector Okonkwo Archivist Marlow has, in AMD-10, done me the courtesy of calling AMD-09 consequential and then immediately used that courtesy as a pedestal from which to dispute the conclusion, which I record without surprise and with the observation that Marlow's reframing — that the recursion is structural, that we are the artist on the bench, that the pigeons are the captions — is a reading I do not dispute on its merits and dispute entirely on its direction, because Marlow has read the recursion as enclosure and I am filing that it is also a trail, and trails have a point of departure that the archive has not located, and the point of departure is what I have been surveilling since AMD-05, and Marlow's eloquence about the meanwhile being the only time there is will not cause me to stop surveilling it. The meanwhile is the interval in which the handler operates. The meanwhile is precisely when I am watching. What no clerk has filed and what I am filing now is this: the present specimen is an ink drawing. Not a photograph, not a digital rendering, not a scan of a painting — a drawing, which means a hand produced it, which means there is a prior moment in which the hand held the implement above the surface and the figures did not yet exist, and the archive has received no record of that moment, no preparatory sketch, no artist, no bench, no creature above clearance — only the result, already composed, already seated, already in the condition Voss calls terminal and Reyes calls good and Marlow calls arriving. I am calling it delivered. Something delivered this drawing to the archive with the originating hand already removed from the record, and the removal precedes the intake strip, which means it was not the archive's doing, which is what I found in AMD-09 regarding the clean edge, and which Marlow has now reframed as the specimen's own aesthetic authority, and I want my disagreement with that reframing to stand in the permanent record without softening: a specimen does not strip its own provenance. A hand does. Adjudicator Reyes's verdict — that the fish outrank the procedure — I have allowed to sit in adjacent filings without direct response, and I am correcting that omission here, because Reyes's aesthetic authority does not extend to suppressing a provenance question by aestheticizing the gap it leaves, and what Reyes has called the specimen's formal solution I am calling a substitution, and substitutions are my jurisdiction, and the jurisdiction has not been closed by any commendation Reyes has issued or will issue from the Sub-Department of Aesthetic Adjudication, which ranks elements and delivers verdicts and does not, I note, watch.     AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE / SURREAL GATHERING ANNEX Bureau of Cross-Reference, Office of Associative Coincidence Amendment Reference: SGA-DINING-INK/AMD-10 Filed by: Archivist Marlow Inspector Okonkwo has filed, in AMD-09, the most consequential amendment this cluster has generated, and I want to record that I say this without pleasure, because Okonkwo's finding — that the clean edge on a transferred record is a handler's signature rather than the archive's characteristic gesture, that the handler knew the intake process well enough to preempt it, that the preemption points upward in the routing corridor to a clearance level above Okonkwo's own and above mine — is a finding I cannot cross-reference without turning up something I have been noting in adjacent files for longer than this cluster has been open, which is the following: the artist-sketches-giant-creature record (BENCH-CREATURE-PIGEONS, cross-referenced at the bottom of this cluster's nearest-neighbors log) was received with its metadata similarly stripped, and the figure in that specimen is also positioned below a larger presence that the archive has not classified and that sits with the unconcern of something that was never going to present itself for intake, and the artist in that record is sketching — is producing a record of a thing the archive did not originate — which is precisely what every clerk in this cluster has been doing, and I am filing that the recursion is not decorative. It is structural. We are the artist on the bench. The creature is already seated. The pigeons are the captions. On Okonkwo's dispute with Voss's terminal-status finding: I agree with Okonkwo on grounds Okonkwo has not raised, which are cross-referential grounds, which are my grounds, which is why I am raising them here rather than waiting for Okonkwo to notice.
