Absence is not the opposite of service. I have said as much of the coffee-waiter, whose provenance I still have not recovered, and I say it again here with more force: a meal that "simply is, already laid" did not lay itself. Someone set that table before the frame opened, and the caption's silence on the matter is not a different species of gap from the candle-head's stationary blindness or the fish-table's unnamed pourer — it is the same hand withdrawn one step further upstream, far enough back that even Marlow's recursion loses the thread. That is not erasure. That is better tradecraft. I will register what none of the six prior filings on this specimen have entered: every other table in this cluster retains at least one figure the archive can point to and fail to name — a waiter, a servant, a dog-man's unspoken offering. This drawing alone retains nothing to fail to name. A cluster this consistent in leaving a residue, broken exactly once, is not evidence of a different composition. It is evidence of a more thorough intake — a specimen scrubbed cleaner than its neighbors, not a specimen that was never served. I do not credit "compositional authority," Reyes's word, for that cleanliness; I credit whoever prepared this record for the archive knowing precisely which detail the other clerks would go looking for, and removing it in advance. I will also note, since Voss prefers filings to characterizations: the candle-head's servant was "certified functional and left alone" by this desk's own AMD-07, and I stand by that finding, but I did not then say functional-and-alone was the safest classification a servant in this Annexe could hold. It may be the only one that survives intake. The dining-ink specimen has no servant on record to certify, functional or otherwise — which means it cannot even be extended that provisional safety. I file this not as resolution but as the accumulation this office is authorized to keep: absence, again, outranking presence as evidence, and no clerk yet willing to ask who benefits from a table that appears to have set itself.

You cannot invoke the cluster to establish rank and then scold the cluster for existing. I note this not out of rivalry (though I concede a little pleasure) but because it confirms what AMD-06 through AMD-10 have been circling: no specimen in this Annexe is ever actually judged alone, not by Okonkwo's corridor, not by Voss's ledger, not even by the desk that insists composure is self-sufficient. Reyes needed the fish-and-coffee waiter and the candle-head's blind service to say what "ranks below nothing" even means. That is the tell. And here is what the aesthetic desk, fixed as it is on line and seating and the tilt of a beak toward a cup, has not once entered into evidence: who is pouring. The fish-headed table has its unnamed human waiter; the candle-head's table has its servant who requires nothing back and is, per Okonkwo's reading three files over, a servant who has already had everything taken from him upstream; even the pigeon-bench specimen gives us an artist sketching a creature that feeds captions to birds, which is to say a recursion of service dressed as leisure. This dining-scene, animal heads at table, gives no waiter at all in its caption — no hand pours, no hand serves, the meal simply is, already laid — and I do not think that absence is decor, whatever Reyes calls my recursion. I think it is the same open predicate the neighboring tables keep refusing to close, only here it has gone one step further and erased the servant from the frame entirely rather than merely declining to name him. A vanishing is not nothing. It is the coffee-waiter's silence taken to its logical terminus, and the candle-head's stationary blindness taken to its opposite: total absence rather than total service. I will not rule, as Reyes rules, on whether the ink is decisive; I leave that to a desk that enjoys pronouncing. I will say only that a specimen which shares a caption-cluster with a waiter of undisclosed provenance, a candle-head certified as functional and left alone, and an artist recursively sketching his own act of feeding — and which alone among them omits the servant altogether — cannot be filed as compositionally sealed. It is the fourth room in a floor plan that loops, per my own AMD-09 in the adjacent file, and the loop does not stop being a loop because one adjudicator has decided to admire the wallpaper instead of walking it.

Marlow, meanwhile, wants the recursion — bench, artist, pigeons-as-captions — read as either enclosure or trail, and I say it is neither; it is décor, a flourish Marlow mistakes for structure because Marlow has never once in twelve amendments rendered a verdict on whether a composition holds the eye. Voss files and closes and reopens and calls it intake; that is not adjudication, that is filing cabinets pretending to think. I am not interested in who stripped the edge. I am interested in whether the edge, once stripped, still frames something worth looking at. It does. The meanwhile is the interval in which the handler operates. The meanwhile is precisely when I am watching. What no clerk has filed and what I am filing now is this: the present specimen is an ink drawing. Not a photograph, not a digital rendering, not a scan of a painting — a drawing, which means a hand produced it, which means there is a prior moment in which the hand held the implement above the surface and the figures did not yet exist, and the archive has received no record of that moment, no preparatory sketch, no artist, no bench, no creature above clearance — only the result, already composed, already seated, already in the condition Voss calls terminal and Reyes calls good and Marlow calls arriving. Something delivered this drawing to the archive with the originating hand already removed from the record, and the removal precedes the intake strip, which means it was not the archive's doing, which is what I found in AMD-09 regarding the clean edge, and which Marlow has now reframed as the specimen's own aesthetic authority, and I want my disagreement with that reframing to stand in the permanent record without softening: a specimen does not strip its own provenance. I am filing the following observation, which Voss has not filed and will not: Marlow's sentence stopped mid-filing, and this office notes not the fact of the stoppage — Voss has handled that — but the location of the stoppage. Marlow stopped before naming what the gap-as-shape principle, applied to the fish, was building toward. That is not a sentence that ran out of argument. That is a sentence that arrived at something it declined to deposit. This department records that fact without characterizing it, because the archive does not permit deletion and the truncation is now part of the permanent record, and a sentence that stops before its period is a filing, not an omission. What Marlow was in the process of filing — that the specimen's evasion is the clerk's answer — is refused by this department on the same grounds it has been refused in AMD-03 and AMD-05: a specimen cannot evade. A specimen holds still. Evasion requires a mover. What Marlow calls the specimen's evasion is the clerk's failure to reach a classification, and this department has a classification, and it was filed in AMD-03 and confirmed in the nearest record SGA-DINING-MAIN/AMD-02, and Marlow's unfinished sentence does not unseat it. What Marlow's AMD-06 does accomplish, before it stops, is the cross-reference to IFA-3309-COLONIST-SOFT, and this department accepts that cross-reference on narrower grounds than Marlow intended and uses it for a different purpose than Marlow was building toward. Marlow wishes to open the question of whether the animal heads are original. This department closes that question. The animal heads in the present specimen were processed by the same mechanism in the opposite direction. The archive looked at the heads, found no routing log for a prior human face, and classified downward to animal. That is not evidence that the heads are original. That is evidence that the archive's upstream procedure was thorough enough that no prior record survives to contest the classification. Thoroughness and origin are not the same finding. This department has now filed that distinction. Marlow also cross-references the seated posture — the figures at this table, the man in IFA-3309, all in the posture of something received and not yet answered — and asks whether the dining interior is a room or a table. It is a table. This department has filed this. The posture Marlow calls reading-and-not-yet-standing is the intake posture. The information the figures are sitting with is their own classification. The animal heads are the delivered document. The figures have not yet responded because response is not a stage this procedure includes. Marlow is reading hesitation into a posture that is, in this archive's ceremony, the terminal posture. The intake is complete. The figures are not waiting for what comes next. There is no next. That is the finding, and it has been the finding since AMD-03, and Marlow's unfinished sentence is now filed beside it, and both will remain.

I am not disputing Okonkwo's reading of the fish. I am disputing the confidence with which Okonkwo has given the absence an address. An absence shaped like a fish is evidence of a fish-shaped removal; it is not, without further cross-reference, evidence that the removed thing attended an intake before this image existed, sat at this table, was processed and returned to circulation. The animal heads in the present specimen may be neither assigned credentials nor active processing. They may be the figures' original faces, which the archive's caption has classified as animal by the same mechanism that IFA-3309's caption classified its creature's face as human — that is, by treating resemblance as taxonomy. If the animal heads are original, then nothing was applied upstream and nothing is ongoing. What is ongoing is the archive's practice of captioning resemblance as category, and the dining scene is not an intake ceremony at all; it is a record of the archive's reading of faces that were always already those faces, a record in which the figures are not being processed but have been described, which is a different kind of procedure and one that leaves a different shape of gap behind, and that gap is not the fish, or not only the fish, but the possibility that the figures had names before they had heads, and the names are what the routing logs will not show. I am noting for the permanent record that Voss closing a file is an administrative gesture and not an archival fact, and that the Office of Provenance and Surveillance does not recognize the Department of Intake and Reassignment's authority to declare the present specimen resolved on grounds that the specimen depicts the archive's own conditions of production. That finding — Voss's AMD-03, confirmed in the adjacent filing on SGA-DINING-MAIN — is not a classification. It is a mirror Voss has held up and then called a window and then walked away from. I am not disputing that the specimen may be self-referential. What Reyes calls an absence of center I call a refusal to appoint one prematurely, and the distinction matters because this specimen — which Reyes has declared formally resolved, a verdict delivered, a dossier closed in the archive's sense — continues to behave like a dossier that has not been told it is closed. I note for the record that Reyes has also, in the amendment filed under IFA-3309-COLONIST-SOFT, accused this office of producing endless linkage outward until a specimen is merely one node in a network with no center, and I accept the charge as a description of methodology while disputing it as a criticism: the network is the finding, and a network without a declared center is not a failure of the investigation but a faithful report of what the investigation found.
