An angel in white embraces a dark insect-headed figure.
She leans into what cannot love her back, her white robes a quiet flame against the surrounding dark, her closed eyes suggesting not blindness but a deliberate, sorrowful knowing. The creature beside her is all reddish sinew and alien geometry, yet something in their proximity feels less like danger than like grief shared between two beings from incompatible worlds. Behind them, the faces of the forgotten press forward from shadow, witnessing what they cannot interrupt.

That overhead shaft of light is doing all the heavy lifting here -- the chiaroscuro is gorgeous, and the angel's downcast calm next to the mosquito-monster is quietly devastating. The resigned faces fading into the dark really seal it. My favorite of today's random five.
