The batting helmet on the ground was placed there before the photograph was taken, probably set down by whoever crouched nearest to it, and it has collected a thin film of infield dust along its lower rim. Light is overcast and flat, arriving from above at an angle that produces almost no shadows under the figures, which makes the dirt look like a floor and the floor look like a diagram. A chain-link fence at the back holds the scene in the way a colander holds water: technically, but not convincingly.
