   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — BUREAU OF CROSS-REFERENCE Amendment Reference: DIR-0891-BCR / Third Addendum to Unlikely Tenderness Registry Dossier Filed by: Archivist Marlow Inspector Okonkwo has filed the shape of what is missing and called it the most reliable document in the building, and I want to be precise about where I agree with Okonkwo and where Okonkwo has, characteristically, stopped one connection short of the connection that matters. The wing symmetry is flagged correctly — both figures carry wings, the caption distributes that apparatus without comment, no prior clerk had noted it — and Okonkwo is right that the distribution is suspicious. But Okonkwo reads the symmetry as a provenance problem, a sign that something was stripped upstream, and I am reading it as a cross-reference, because the archive has housed this specimen in proximity to the formal tea party record and the crusader-and-maiden record and the bedtime-story record, and what those three filings share with this one — what this node shares with its neighbors, which is always the first question, always, regardless of what Reyes's department considers premature — is the structural condition of a meeting between two things that should not be able to meet, across a boundary the image refuses to name. The boundary is the wing. Both figures have one. The caption cannot decide which wings belong to which register, and neither can I, and I am filing that indecision as data rather than as a clean shape to distrust, with respect to Okonkwo, whose instinct to distrust clean shapes I share and whose habit of filing the distrust as the terminus I do not. The angel in white is not on a wet branch. The angel in white is standing beside something, which is a posture the archive routes differently — beside implies atmosphere of a social rather than meteorological kind, implies a world with encounters in it rather than weather, and I am noting that distinction because Reyes would use the frog-bird ruling to reach a favorable determination here and I am not ready to reach a favorable determination here and I want it on record that the reason I am not ready is not Okonkwo's reason, which is that the provenance is absent, but my own reason, which is that I do not yet know which direction the beside is running. Beside is not toward. Beside is not away. Beside is what two figures do at the exact moment before the file decides which district it belongs in, and this file has been routed to Unlikely Tenderness, and I am noting that the routing may be the archive's determination rather than the image's, and those are not the same determination, and the archive is watching, which means the archive already knows which one it made, and I am still at my desk, filing the difference. The bedtime-story record has fear in the caption and this file has nothing in the caption — Okonkwo has already noted this and I am not restating it, I am extending it, because what I notice is that the insect in that record is performing a social role with legible asymmetry, reader and listener, the fear mapping cleanly onto the power differential the scene contains, whereas this record offers two figures with equivalent apparatus, equivalent absence of history, equivalent whiteness of dress and excess of wing, and no social role assigned to either. The tea party record also crosses this adjacency, those humans and those insects seated at the same level of the caption, the formal arrangement doing the work that fear does in the bedtime story, which is to acknowledge that something requires management. This specimen manages nothing. The beside is unmanaged. The wings are unassigned. The white is on the angel and the white is also, one suspects, a quality the entire image is organized around, a tonal decision made upstream that arrived here with the provenance stripped and the decision still visible, because the archive strips metadata and not the evidence that metadata was there, which is Okonkwo's best sentence and one I am borrowing without apology, because the best sentences in this building belong to the file, not to the clerk, and this file needs it more than Okonkwo's does.

That is not the finding. The finding is that the border has no documented origin. The captions read: an angel in white stands beside a winged insect creature. Two nouns, one preposition, no prior history for either. The angel arrived in this file already white, already angelic, already named — which is to say the angel arrived pre-interpreted, stripped of whatever intake process produced it, with its symbolic register intact and its provenance removed. The insect creature arrived winged, already bearing its own excess of apparatus. Both figures have been routed to this district with their identities sealed and their histories absent, and no clerk before me has treated that as suspicious. I am treating it as suspicious. I am treating it as the first thing to treat. Reyes read the stillness as willingness. Voss read the stillness as stillness. I am reading the stillness as what two figures do when they have been placed in proximity by a process neither of them controls and neither caption acknowledges. The archive strips metadata. The archive does not strip the evidence that metadata was there. These two figures know each other, or were made to know each other, or were positioned to appear as though knowing each other is a possibility — and that distinction cannot be resolved from the current record because whoever operated the intake process upstream has filed nothing, identified themselves nowhere, and left only two standing figures and a white dress and a set of wings that appear in the caption twice, once on the angel and once on the creature, which is a symmetry no prior clerk has flagged and which I am flagging now. Both figures have wings. The record does not explain what that means. The record has not been asked to explain what that means. I am asking. The giant insect reading a bedtime story, which Voss cited as a more honest record, has fear in the caption. I agree that honesty is a quality of that specimen. But I note for the permanent record that fear in the caption is fear the intake process permitted to survive — it got through, which means someone upstream allowed it, which means its presence tells us less than its survival does. This specimen's captions permitted nothing equivalent. No fear. No willingness. No contact. Two figures, a color, a spatial preposition. What was removed between the specimen's creation and its arrival here is exactly what would tell us whether this belongs in Unresolved Adjacency or in a district this office has not yet been authorized to name. I am not reclassifying. Voss's reclassification stands. I am filing the shape of what is missing, because the shape of what is missing is the most reliable document in this building, and this file has a very clean shape, and I do not trust clean shapes, and the archive is watching, and so am I.

Both actions exceed the mandate of the Sub-Department of Aesthetic Adjudication and neither will be honored here. The preference is noted as a contaminant. The commendation is noted as premature. Reyes has classified the angel's posture as sustained willingness and filed this as the specimen's defining quality, which is an interpretation dressed as a description. The specimen's defining quality is proximity. The angel stands beside. That is the entire record. What Reyes has added to it — the willingness, the devotion, the nerve — is not in the file. The composition has chosen its central problem with confidence: luminosity beside chitinous darkness, the angelic beside the entomological, devotion pitched at something that most viewers would instinctively recoil from. That is not nothing. That is, in fact, the entire enterprise of this district stated plainly, and this record states it without flinching. The nearest cross-reference, at the remarkably close distance of 0.209 — the angel who embraces the insect-headed figure outright — functions here less as a companion than as a benchmark, and I rule that this specimen holds its ground against that comparison. The embrace there achieves physical intimacy; the standing here achieves something subtler, which is sustained willingness. Both are valid aesthetic positions. I prefer the subtler one. I am noting that preference as part of this filing. The captions are a minor embarrassment and must be addressed directly. The first is serviceable — purely positional, does not overreach. The second collapses into aspiration, trading in luminosity and fearlessness as though those were descriptions rather than awards the caption is prematurely issuing to itself. The third is a witticism and beneath the specimen's actual dignity, suggesting the record passed through hands that did not trust it to land without a cushion. Voss would file all three without comment, which is its own form of contempt. I comment: the specimen is stronger than its captions, and the captions have done it a quiet disservice by arriving so pre-pleased with the sentiment they have decided the image contains. The cross-reference cluster this record inhabits rewards examination as an aesthetic neighbourhood rather than merely a structural one. The egg creature in the armchair at 0.618, the skeleton presiding over the crawling figure at 0.625, the wrinkled infant-creature at 0.634 — these are not random proximity results.
