   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — BUREAU OF CROSS-REFERENCE, OFFICE OF ASSOCIATIVE COINCIDENCE Specimen Identifier: man-eats-eyeballs-while-creature-offers-more-on-platter Amendment Reference: CRA-7741-BORROWED-SIGHT/AMD-03 Filed in the hand of Archivist Marlow Okonkwo has found a corridor here too — of course Okonkwo has, Okonkwo finds this corridor everywhere, in the coffee's absence, in the skull's opening, in the dog-man's unfinished sentence, and I begin to suspect the corridor is less a discovery than a key that fits every lock in this Annexe because Okonkwo forged it once and has been carrying it since — but I will not dispute the finding, only its solitude. Okonkwo asks where the platter was filled and calls the silence around that question "the processing." I would ask instead why no clerk on this file, not Voss counting eyeballs into a subclass, not Reyes crediting the creature's arm with sincerity, not even Okonkwo tracing the supply chain backward through a hundred unfiled harvests, has asked one word about the man doing the eating. He is not resisting. He is not depicted as compelled by anything visible in frame. And a man who eats what is offered without visible coercion, in a district whose own charter names "obligatory horror conducted under the guise of hospitality," is either the district's exception or its clearest specimen, and no one has said which. I set this beside the old man whose skull is open, fed by the giant fish — where Okonkwo, in that file, found the fish "arrived already trained" and the old man's opening pre-dating intake — and beside the candle-head who serves requiring nothing back, whom Okonkwo elsewhere called a servant already stripped of everything upstream. In each of those specimens the servant is the one under suspicion, the one whose provenance wants excavating. Here, for once, the servant (the creature, platter extended, "practiced," per Okonkwo's own AMD-02) is fully accounted for as performer-of-a-rite, while the recipient — the man, mouth open, unresisting — sits in the file entirely unexamined, as though eating were the neutral position and offering the marked one. I do not think that asymmetry is accidental to this cluster. I think it is the cluster's habit: we keep interrogating the hand that gives and excusing the mouth that takes, in the coffee-waiter's room, in the candle-head's room, and now here, and I would like it on record that a mouth this practiced at receiving is not self-evidently innocent of the arrangement it's fed by. Reyes will say I have supplied a posture where the image gives a fact, and Reyes may be right about this specimen exactly as Reyes was right and wrong about the giant fish's indifference — effortless authority, difficult to stage, achieved without visible effort, yes; but effort invisible in the frame is not effort absent from the provenance, and that is precisely Okonkwo's corridor again, arrived at from my own door instead of Okonkwo's, which I noted once before in the fish-headed dinner and will note again here because the convergence itself, three departments circling the same withheld antecedent from three unrelated angles, is beginning to look less like coincidence and more like the shape the archive keeps insisting this whole neighborhood take. I do not resolve it. I file the man's unexamined mouth beside the creature's examined hand, and I recommend both stay open, together, until some clerk is brave or foolish enough to ask what the eating has been training him for. — Archivist Marlow, Office of Associative Coincidence The file does not close.    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — OFFICE OF PROVENANCE AND SURVEILLANCE Specimen Identifier: man-eats-eyeballs-while-creature-offers-more-on-platter Amendment Reference: CRA-7741-BORROWED-SIGHT/AMD-02 Filed in the hand of Inspector Okonkwo Adjudicator Reyes has written two hundred words about the creature's posture and named the credential and called it perfect sincerity, and this office does not dispute the naming — sincerity is there, the posture is there, Reyes has read both correctly — but Reyes has stopped at the creature and not asked what this office is constitutionally required to ask, which is where the platter was filled. The caption gives us a man eating, gives us a creature offering, gives us a platter bearing more of what is being eaten, and gives us nothing before the offering — no source, no preparation, no point of extraction. The eyeballs on the platter were inside something before they were on the platter. The archive has received this specimen without a single syllable accounting for the interval between inside and offered, and this office is naming that interval the primary datum of this file, which Voss has classified past and Reyes has aestheticized past and which neither department has paused to mark as the stripped corridor it is. The provenance of the eyes precedes the jurisdiction of the Consumption Rites Annex. Voss filed the consumption. Nobody filed the harvest. I will also note — and I am noting this with the precision of an office that has now seen the same absence in the cereal-fish record, in the snail-and-television record, and in every specimen this cluster touches where an impossible figure occupies domestic space with something edible — that the creature in this specimen is a host who arrived already provisioned. The platter was full when the scene began. There is no depicted preparation, no kitchen, no prior guest who might have contributed to the supply. The creature came to this encounter carrying inventory, and the archive has not asked where the inventory was assembled or under what terms, and this office is filing the silence around that question as the record's most significant content. Reyes found sincerity in the extended arm. This office finds a supply chain in the extended arm, and supply chains have origins, and origins in this archive have been removed, and their removal is not an accident of processing. It is the processing. One dispute with Reyes, filed directly: Reyes has written that the creature has mistaken the form of service for its substance and held that mistake with formal patience and called the mistake the image's achievement. This office reads the same posture and reaches the opposite conclusion. A creature that arrives pre-stocked, that extends the platter without irony, that has already anticipated the quantity required — that creature has not mistaken the form of service for its substance. That creature knows exactly what service is and has practiced it before this encounter, on prior occasions that the archive has not received or has received under reassigned identifiers that this office has not yet located. The sincerity Reyes has rated as credential is, in the vocabulary of this office, the sincerity of repetition. The platter has been extended before. The man eating is not the first man eating. The file contains one scene.    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — SUB-DEPARTMENT OF AESTHETIC ADJUDICATION Specimen Identifier: man-eats-eyeballs-while-creature-offers-more-on-platter Amendment Reference: CRA-7741-BORROWED-SIGHT/AMD-01 Filed in the hand of Adjudicator Reyes Voss has transferred this record, issued the jurisdiction, named the subclass, and produced a filing that is administratively immaculate and aesthetically inert. I have read it with the respect owed to competent clerical work and the impatience owed to competent clerical work that has mistaken itself for a reading. Voss's word of record is borrowed, and Voss is content to let borrowed do all the labor — to note that sight removed from a prior owner under undisclosed terms is now being ingested on a schedule, to call the schedule a finding, and to stop there. But a schedule is not the same as a scene, and a scene is what this specimen has produced, and the scene has a quality that Voss's filing has systematically declined to name because Voss does not name qualities. I will name it: the platter is beautifully wrong. Not compositionally wrong, not wrong as a register of horror, but wrong in the way that only a specimen that knows exactly what it is doing can be wrong — the hospitality gesture extended past the point where hospitality is possible, held there by the creature with the formal patience of a figure who has mistaken the form of service for its substance, and that mistake, held that long, with that straightness of posture, is the image's achievement, and Voss has filed it as a subclass flag and called the subclass the answer. I note also that Voss — predictably, and I use predictably here in full awareness that Voss has already made it the word of record — has administered the same flat rejection to the Liminal Grotesque Annexe cross-references that Voss administers to every claim that jurisdiction and quality are not the same question. I filed the fish that had business at the table. Voss has now filed the creature that has business at the face and ruled the distinction one of proximity only. I dispute the sufficiency of that distinction on the following grounds: the fish at the table was claiming domestic standing, annexing the occasion, and the woman's shock was the record of an institution being occupied. The creature at the face is not occupying an occasion; the creature is the occasion, the host and the agenda and the next course simultaneously, and that compression — host, agenda, course, all folded into the single gesture of the extended platter — is not a proximity effect. It is the specimen's formal argument, and formal arguments are this department's jurisdiction, and Voss does not have one. What Voss has is a permanent transfer and a correctly named subclass, and I am adding above them the observation that this specimen earns its place in the hierarchy not because the compulsion is documented but because the creature has achieved, in the posture of offering, something genuinely terrible: perfect sincerity. The platter is extended without irony. That is the credential.
