Marlow is right that the tentacle has done service elsewhere — three rooms, four, I no longer count them as Okonkwo does — but Marlow mistakes recurrence for merit, as though a motif earns rank by frequency of appearance rather than by what it accomplishes each time it appears. Here it accomplishes the whole picture's claim to being looked at twice. Against the leviathan's foot I rank this specimen lower — that digital ward at least commits to a grotesquerie fully imagined, foot and monster both rendered with a hand that wanted you to flinch and laugh in the same breath. This mud-crowd wants nothing from you but confirmation that a crowd gathered, which is Voss's whole religion and none of mine. I decline Okonkwo's checkpoint, decline Voss's Subject Singular, and enter beneath both: Class B-minus, Coastal Emergence register — a specimen redeemed from the documentary heap by one competent stroke of anatomy and dragged no further than that stroke can carry it. The crowd may remain unaccounted-for by Okonkwo's arithmetic forever; I am not the desk that cares who summoned them. I am the desk that notes they were composed without wit, lit without intention, and saved from the discard drawer only because something with suckers reached far enough into the frame to matter.

Voss protects the classification. I am asking who benefits from the classification never being asked to produce a manifest. This office reminds Marlow that a hinge is hardware, not a deed of ownership. Class CA-07 was entered by this desk, stands filed by this desk, and no amount of tide-table poetry converts a filed classification into a shared fixture available for borrowing. Marlow's "lattice" is not a finding. It is a mood arranged to resemble one. A tentacle in one district and a foot in another are not the same limb wearing two coats. A tentacle is not a tentacle the way a doorknob is a doorknob — Voss knows this, or ought to, having himself dragged the leviathan's foot sideways into the shore-district ledger only to disown the very gesture he made. I do not require Voss's coat-rack metaphor to notice that this appendage keeps recurring at the exact seam where a body ought to explain itself and does not: compare the foot Reyes still insists is "the joke's only required silence" (ADR-LEVIATHAN-FOOT/AMD-20), compare the crowd two beaches over that Okonkwo swears will not turn its head (OPS-AMEND-CAI-025), compare the four women who attend without naming what they attend to. None of these is proof of a scheme. I have never filed for a scheme. I file for a shape, and the shape here is a body arriving in pieces convenient to whoever is looking — a foot where a foot embarrasses, a tentacle where a tentacle identifies, an absence of names wherever a name would cost someone something. Where Okonkwo hunts a warehouse and Voss hunts a completed form and Reyes hunts a punchline earning its perch, I hunt none of these and all of them at once, because the lattice does not require a single culprit to be worth weaving — that is precisely what Voss cannot forgive it for. Class CA-07 may stand, filed, load-bearing, exactly as Voss insists; I do not strike it, this desk does not carry an eraser either. But standing alone is not the same as standing unconnected, and Voss's insistence that "a shared part of the body is not a shared docket" mistakes the archive for a filing cabinet when it has always, under every amendment, every district, behaved more like a tide table — the same water returning under different tags, the same mud drying on a different beach, the same crowd gathering to look at what it has, in some earlier drawer, already been shown. The mud was never asked anything — nobody here asks the mud, that's the whole of what Voss and Okonkwo have spent nine amendments failing to agree on while agreeing on it — but the tentacle was asked something, or rather it answers something whether asked or not, and Reyes's own ledger proves it: singular, definite, "the one nameable thing a hurried eye seized on before the rest of the frame went to fog." Set that beside the leviathan foot two dossiers over (ADR-LEVIATHAN-FOOT/AMD-17, my own filing, and I do not apologize for citing myself, self-citation is simply cross-reference performed on a smaller archive) — a single limb, orphaned of its owner's face, doing all the identifying work a caption declined to do elsewhere. Tentacle here, foot there. Both singular. Both definite. Both the last solid noun before the sentence gives up and the fog Reyes is so fond of naming takes the rest. I do not say the two specimens share a hand. I say they share a habit, and a habit repeated across two districts is not decoration, it is the archive's own hand-tremor, visible if you hold enough pages up to the same light at once. And Reyes ranks this specimen against the shore file's governed four and the bikini file's ungoverned surround as though number were the only axis worth walking — four women counted, an uncounted crowd, a verb with appetite versus a verb without — but there is a second axis Reyes keeps stepping over on the way to the shelf, which is that this specimen's single named part answers to the fish-costume mingler's single named absence (DIR-AMEND-CMA-018, Voss's own OCC-03, "an occupant permitted to keep its foam anonymous") in the exact inverse: where the mingler hides its tenant behind seamless costume, this file surfaces its one anatomical fact so nakedly that Reyes mistakes the nakedness for haste. But set the insult aside: Voss's "convenes versus holds" distinction, offered as settled, is precisely the kind of clean binary this littoral cluster keeps refusing to honor. The table convenes bodies that came separately; the shoreline, Voss says, merely holds what surfaces. But this crowd did not surface — the creature did, the crowd assembled around it exactly as the four women assembled around their large creature two records over, exactly as the bikini-clad attendants held their vigil around the dreaming globe, and if assembly is inert in one file and central in another, as Voss's own AMD-07 to the shore dossier now insists against my AMD-06, then the inertness was never a property of assembly at all — it was a property of which desk got there first and decided not to look twice.
