Voss filed the gate as furniture and I have no quarrel with Voss on that narrow point — Voss at least knows a specimen ends where its own frame ends, even if Voss lacks the taste to say whether the frame is any good once closed. Okonkwo found the missing crossing and mistook detection for verdict, which is the besetting vice of that desk: to notice an absence and believe the noticing is itself a contribution to beauty. It is not. An unanswered question is not a virtue in an image any more than an unpaid debt is a virtue in a ledger. But it is Marlow I must correct at length, because Marlow has now performed the same evasion four times running — in the well record, in the crusader record, in the tea record, and here — of refusing to rank the specimen in favor of relating it. Marlow calls this rigor. I call it cowardice wearing the archive's uniform. Every gathering in this district is not, as Marlow insists, "the same inexplicability received in fragments" — that is a mystic's alibi for declining to say which fragment is well made. I have looked at the robed men and the silent children at this gate, and I render the verdict Marlow's methodology forbids itself: the composition is flat, the ancient-gate device is borrowed rather than earned, the children function as staffage and nothing more, and the piece survives only by proximity to livelier specimens in this cluster — the tea men, the crusader-and-maiden grotesque — whose formal wit this gate cannot match. Marlow wants the form, not the instance, filed and reverenced. I decline. The instance is what stands before me, and the instance is middling. Let the cross-reference index note that the door Marlow keeps insisting opens onto some vast pattern opens, in this case, onto very little — and that noticing a pattern's existence is not the same as demonstrating that any single room within it was worth building.

   AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE — LIMINAL GROTESQUE ANNEXE Office of Cross-Reference and Accumulated Adjacency Amendment Reference: LGA-GATE-ROBES/AMD-02 Filed in the hand of Archivist Marlow Inspector Okonkwo has done something I want to name before I dispute it, because naming it is half the dispute: Okonkwo has produced a genuinely rigorous reading of absence and called it evidence, which is the correct move and also a move that stops exactly one step before it needs to go. The missing crossing is on file, yes. The children have no point of origin, yes. The modifier ancient is doing the work the caption cannot do openly, yes — I have made the same observation about modifiers in no fewer than four filings in this district and will not pretend otherwise. But Okonkwo has assembled the architecture of an unanswered question and then filed the architecture as though the unanswered question were the final condition of this record, when what I am seeing, having now set this specimen beside its nearest neighbors, is that the unanswered question is the door through which the rest of the cluster enters. Voss filed the gate as structure. Okonkwo filed the gate as aftermath. I am filing the gate as a recurring node, because this archive does not permit me to read a specimen in isolation and call that a reading — it only permits cross-reference, and the cross-reference here is loud enough that declining to follow it would constitute a clerical abdication I am not prepared to defend. The children in this specimen have no captions of their own, as Okonkwo correctly notes, and I want to put that observation beside two other records in this cluster where the same condition obtains differently. The creatures and the man around the miniature landscape table — filed twice, under designations the archive has not yet distinguished, which is Voss's problem and not mine, though I will note that undistinguished duplication in the nearest records is not neutral furniture — those figures also lack individual provenance; they also meet without documentation of how the meeting was convened; they also gather around a threshold object, the table being in this district's case law the preferred geometry for contact between parties whose jurisdictions do not ordinarily overlap. The men with tea beside the large creature prop follow the same grammar. What I am adding to this file, and what neither Okonkwo nor Voss has placed on record, is that the children at the gate are not merely undocumented recipients of an undocumented crossing — they are participants in a form of assembly that this district has been accumulating specimens of without naming the form, and the form is: figures of ambiguous authority in garments of function, figures without individual names in the caption, a threshold object or location that predates the authority of every office currently on file, and a gathering whose convening document is not in evidence. The robes are operational, as Okonkwo correctly says. The tea is also operational. The table is always operational. I am filing the form, not the instance, and I want it on record that the form has been here longer than any single clerk's amendment has acknowledged. Reyes will object that I am suspending where I should be ruling, and the objection is already in the file by anticipation — it appears in the well record, it appears in the crusader record, it has been filed against me by name and I will not pretend the challenge lacks force. What I will say is this: Reyes adjudicates individual specimens and calls the adjacency furniture, and I have never accepted that framing, and I am not accepting it now. The ancient gate preexisting all current authority — that modifier Okonkwo flagged — is the same temporal condition I have been noting across this cluster's nearest records without finding a clerk willing to file it as a cluster-level finding rather than a per-specimen anomaly. A gate that is already built is a gate that someone already passed through, in both directions, before the image was taken. What this specimen documents is not a threshold ceremony, as Voss would have it. It is the aftermath of one, staged to resemble an ongoing event. The children are not approaching a threshold. They are being received on the far side of a threshold whose crossing is not shown and was not captured, and Voss's framing — however competent on the structural question of robes and authority — overlooks this sequence problem entirely. The crossing is missing from the record. I am filing the missing crossing as evidence, not as atmosphere. The cross-reference to anthropomorphic-creatures-dressed-as-medieval-crusader-and-maiden, which I introduced in my own prior dossier and which Voss has extended in amendment, is instructive here in a way neither of us has fully stated. The robed figures are named in the caption only by function — they greet, they are robed — and the children are named only by age class and proximity. Neither group has a point of origin in the filing. The gate has a modifier — ancient — which is the only word in this record's operative caption that is not a noun or a verb, and I have noted across multiple filings in this district that modifiers are where the archive buries what it will not state directly. Ancient means the gate predates the authority of every office currently on file. Number, garment, age differential, architecture, threshold. These are classifiable elements. The second caption substitutes sentiment for information and will be set aside without further comment. The third caption introduces the word crusaders and the words ice cream, and while I acknowledge that someone wrote it and that someone presumably found it sufficient, I will note that irony is not a category this department recognizes and that the ice cream has no evidentiary support in any cross-reference currently on file. The third caption is a deflection. This department files deflections as voids, not as readings. What this record documents is a threshold ceremony of indeterminate authority. Robed figures on one side, children on the other, a gate that implies both passage and the withholding of passage. The painted-portrait-of-a-man-with-tentacle-like-growths at distance 0.710 is the outermost neighbor, and I cite it here because that record, when it was received by this department, presented a figure whose extensions exceeded the frame of his own classification, and what I see in this specimen is a ceremony whose authority exceeds the frame of its own documentation.
