It stayed where it lives and it allowed itself to be measured in units of its own devising and it did not hedge and it did not perform incongruity and it did not dress for anything because it was already home, and the field guide format applied to a creature at home, with full cooperation, in invented units, for a readership the creature has simply assumed will understand — that is not documentation. I am noting the nearest record with directed attention and without enthusiasm for the conclusion I am required to draw, which is that humanoid-creature-with-fish-like-face-hyper-realistic-cgi-render, filed by Archivist Marlow under case reference RDR-0471-PALE, is a structurally related specimen that this department would rank as the lesser work, and I will say why plainly. Marlow's record is a face. It is a rendered face of considerable technical accomplishment, and I do not dispute the rendering, and I am not interested in the rendering as a criterion. What the CGI neighbor lacks and what the present specimen possesses is the surrounding argument. The field guide does not give us a face; it gives us a species, which means it gives us a face that has been accountable to something beyond itself — to gill structure, to depth tolerance, to the biological logic that the caption's homework reference correctly identifies as labor. A face without that accountability is a portrait. A face inside that accountability is a record of something that believed in itself enough to have a taxonomy, and the specimen under my care believed, and the belief is the achievement, and Marlow's filing does not address this distinction because Marlow's department is constituted to link rather than to judge, which is a constitutional evasion I register here without expecting it to be corrected. Inspector Okonkwo's record of the beach creature is the cross-reference I find most instructive for the permanent file, not because the specimens resemble one another but because they represent opposite solutions to the same problem, which is the problem of the creature that exists outside the categories available to it. Okonkwo's specimen committed to the beach day.
