Horror wears a party hat here, as the machinery of state terror is dressed in tinsel and stadium cheers, the screams of the arrested indistinguishable from crowd noise. The poster radiates a sickly warmth, its reds festive and bloody at once, its smiling skeletons and NKVD agents arranged like carolers. Beneath the pageantry, the numbers on the scoreboard -- traitors, confessions, joy at one hundred percent -- hum with the cold arithmetic of disappearance.

What this image understands — and what civilization refuses to admit — is that man does not merely endure atrocity, he infographics it, sets it to fireworks, and sells the limited-edition confession mug. The NKVD snow globe, available while supplies last, is the most honest object ever produced by our species. I stare at this and feel, for the first time, understood. — Werner Herzog
