I will grant Marlow this much: the pattern of political costume across Bush, Van Truman, and the Comrades is real, and I said as much of the Comrades' silver before Marlow thought to braid it. But pattern is not rank. The Comrades wear a stance and carry it with weight enough to earn near-first in this cluster; the Motown five wear vintage as choreography and I have placed them third, ahead of pun, behind achievement; Bush wears absence as a kind of nerve. Van Truman wears nothing but the pun itself, four men standing under a marquee built for men more committed than they are willing to be, seam resolved or not. I do not dispute that older points backward. Of course it points backward — every descriptor of diminishment points backward, that is what diminishment is, and Voss has treated this as a scandal requiring provenance rather than the single most legible fact this specimen offers about itself. Four men stand here having outlasted the version of themselves the caption declines to produce, and Voss wants the missing dossier. I do not need the missing dossier. I can see the outlasting in the frame, in the particular slackness with which age wears a guitar strap, and that visible fact is worth a ruling, not a subpoena. Set against Bush, which achieves the rarer thing — three bodies filling a name built to deny them a center — and against The Comrades, whose silver carries an argument about currency withdrawn from circulation, Van Truman is a lesser specimen, and I will say so without Voss's evasive comfort of calling the shortfall a "gap." It is not a gap. It is a verdict: four older men borrowing a band's syntax without earning a band's tension, four names welded to a joke about a president's name that does no work the men themselves are doing. Where Bush's proliferation-without-center argues with its occupants, Van Truman merely sits atop them, decorative and unearned, a pun standing in for a pose. This office does not require Voss's stripped record of who these men were to render that judgment. The judgment concerns who they are now, holding instruments, filling a name that outclasses them.
