A lizard in full Crusader kit and a donkey in a peasant dress share what appears to be a meaningful moment on what is, objectively, a very bad battlefield. The supporting cast includes insectoid foot soldiers, a small wicker ball with one eye, and a crab near the ground whose presence raises more questions than the painting answers. The composition is meticulous, which somehow makes the whole thing more unsettling rather than less.
