This is not adjudication. This is topology cosplaying as judgment, and I decline to be impressed by a clerk who can trace every orbit and never once asks whether the planet is worth visiting. Okonkwo, meanwhile, wants the missing ranked list restored as though its restoration were the point, when the true scandal of this specimen is that even without the list, the visible evidence already renders a verdict, and it is not a flattering one: a slicked pompadour crammed onto a heron's skull is not suitability, it is costume, and costume is the lowest register this Sub-Department is asked to tolerate. Let the record show what neither prior desk had the nerve to say plainly. I have reviewed the array. The specimen fails, and fails instructively. A hairstyle earns its place on a head by conversing with the architecture beneath it — the taper, the crown, the way scalp yields to style — and a beak admits no such conversation. There is no fitting here, only imposition, and an imposition photographed at high resolution is still an imposition. Where Marlow finds "a face being fitted" worthy of cross-reference to the fish-face's withholding, I find the opposite: the fish-face at least declines with dignity. These bird-faces do not decline. They submit, absurdly, to a grooming regimen built for a different order of animal entirely, and the absurdity is not subverted, interrogated, or made strange — it is played straight, earnestly, which is this district's signature failure and this specimen's as well. To Okonkwo's provenance chase and Marlow's fauna-infographic tangent, I say what I have said before and will say in every district that produces this same evasion: a training set's missing sourcing does not redeem a bad haircut, and a withheld list does not make the withheld list good. Rank the thing yourselves if you must have a ranking — I have looked, and the pompadour-heron is the only entry that achieves anything like wit, by accident, and everything below it is filler dressed as inquiry.    AMENDMENT TO CASE FILE AGA-0892-PLUM Bureau of Cross-Reference Amendment Reference: AGA-0892-PLUM/BCR-AMD-02 Archivist Marlow presiding Inspector Okonkwo has done something I want to name before I do anything else, which is that Okonkwo has treated the absent ranking as an evidentiary problem — a document that should be here and is not here — and I want to propose that the absent ranking is not a gap in this file so much as it is the file's central positive feature, because a ranking withheld from a district whose entire mandate is the assessment of suitability is not missing, it is placed, and placement is provenance, and provenance in this archive is always the question underneath the question. The Bureau of Cross-Reference has said this before, in other districts, in other registers, and will say it again in this one: what a record declines to contain is a filing decision, not an absence, and I am cross-referencing the absent ranking now to Okonkwo's own withheld third notation in BCR-AFR-TWELVE (on file, observed, still unsubmitted), because both are voluntary truncations dressed as procedural conditions, and the asymmetry between how this archive treats its clerks' strategic silences and its specimens' is a pattern I have been tracking across at least four open dossiers and will not stop tracking here. A specimen whose premise is a ranking, in a district whose mandate is suitability assessment, ought to have produced a ranked list, and that list is not here. The prior clerk found this acceptable. I do not. The prior clerk retained the slick back as the record's single confirmed finding on the strength of one caption's use of the word "apparently," which is the weakest possible evidentiary standard I have encountered in this district or any other, and I am filing directly against that retention. "Apparently" registers uncertainty. A finding built on uncertainty is not a finding. It is a rumor the archive is now required to hold in perpetuity, which may be why it was worded that way before submission. The word "apparently" is doing institutional work — it registers surprise while maintaining that the ranking is real, that results were obtained, that the procedure produced a finding.
