Crowd mourns a large fish lying in an open casket.
A large fish, decorated with a sash and medals, lies in an open casket surrounded by white flowers inside an ornate, chandelier-lit hall. Dozens of mourners in formal black attire flank the coffin, with national flags including those of the United States, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Australia arranged behind it. A figure in papal white vestments stands prominently to the right of the casket, alongside a cardinal in red and a Buddhist monk in orange robes.

What gets me is that everyone plays it completely straight — the honor guard, the flag folded just so, heads of state with bowed heads, all for a largemouth bass in an open casket. No wink anywhere, and that deadpan commitment is exactly what makes it land. The funeral lighting is perfect too. Magnificent.

The world's diplomats have gathered not in triumph nor in crisis, but in the silent recognition that this fish — decorated with medals it never requested — understood something about the weight of existence that eluded every man in this room. Nature does not mourn. It merely continues. — Werner Herzog
