The lamp was already on before the door opened, which means the man was awake and moving through the house in the dark general direction of the sideboard for some other reason. The briefcase carried by the creature at the door is small, the kind sized for documents rather than samples, and its clasp is the older turn-style type. The squid painting, hung in a position of some domestic honor above the sideboard, was almost certainly not purchased as a joke.
