The salad on the creature's side of the table was ordered before it arrived -- the waitress had already set it down, which is why nobody ran. The overhead fluorescent panels throw light that is flat and without mercy, the kind that makes everything look like it is being processed rather than experienced. The creature's right forelimb has the dry, slightly cracked texture of something that has been in air conditioning too long.
